Kylo Ren is genuinely embracing the darkness because he realizes he needs to go into the darkness and master it to achieve balance. Rey will rule over the light and he the dark. He's not a "good guy". But he's not a "bad guy" in the sense that Snoke is. He wants balance, and he is going to finish what Anakin started(bring balance to the Force).
So yeah, he's evil, he does evil things, because he needs to to become the supreme ruler of the dark side while working in synchronicity with the light side(Rey). Episode 8 is gonna be p cool.

Script-wise there were indeed some problems: Poe Dameron wouldn't have been memorable at all if it wasn't for Isaac's performance and Finn had turned into too much of a mere comic relief already in the second third of the movie. Still Boyega managed to NOT make him look like an utter buffoon.
As for Rey... man, that's hard to decide. Daisy Ridley was pretty darn great, that's for sure. But was she a likeable character? I think she was, if you disregard the uber-Mary Sue moments (like the "Kessel Run" piece of dialogue – that was just a prime example of a Mary Sue-moment).
And yet, at the end of the day, I guess it's alright if a character is inextricably associated with the actor portraying him or her, wouldn't you say?
