Pretty sure there is a specific group of people at Lucasfilm that has the job of knowing literally every single thing that happens in the canon and making sure it doesn't contradict. No writer or director would have to learn it all. If there was a big contradiction they'd just be told "Hey can this be changed? It contradicts" and that detail would be changed.
