/atfdg/ - Actual Television & Film Discussion General (1.0)

We're going to try this a few times. There are no rules. I just hope that legitimate discussion is the main priority here, not memes and shitposting. (Please & thank you)

You can talk about almost any television show or film you like. Just refrain from discussing subjects that already have their own general.

Please refrain from posting about Star Wars here, as there is already hundreds of threads about it. (Please & thank you)

Lets see if this works. It probably won't, but it's worth a try.

I even made a logo.

I love Johnny To and have watched pretty much every one of his Milkyway Image films... except for his non-crime stuff, that is. Actually I've additionally watched Running on Karma, Blind Detective and Fat Choi Spirit and the kindest critique I can make is that we, in the west, laugh with completely different things than in China. They were frenetic, sure, but a guy in a bodybuilder suit running around and making references to reincarnation is just not funny for me. And it's kind of opaque to be quite honest, my family.

So, what am I missing out on? Are any of To's non-crime films (ex. his romantic comedies) worth it?

PS. I'm about to watch Turn Left, Turn Right.

Not related to any film in particular, but has anyone here succeeded in playing a Region 2 Blu-Ray in America? I want to watch pic related but it was only released for playback in Region 2.

I heard of tricks you can do with your remote to make it play. I also heard you can put it in your computer and burn the contents to a Region A disc. I'm actually considering torrenting it if I can't find another way. Thank you all.

I hated Patrick Wilson before I saw this because of how badly Insidious sat with me. Very good movie. Four characters that appeal to me in different ways trekking across stretches of land in the 1890s or so.

The one thing I didn't like was Patrick's character's wife's reaction to Kurt mentioning they left him a trail to find the cave. She called them idiots. You have 2 lawmen who feel it is their duty to protect you and everyone in your small town, a man who has a vendetta with Indians and feels responsible for dragging you into this, and your loving husband who isn't going to stop until you're safe, and you just call them idiots? The whole journey's purpose was to save her. It just felt extremely ungrateful. Otherwise, incredibly enjoyable movie.

I'll try here since you guys seem to be decent chaps - any of you watched Catch Me Daddy? Would be interested in seeing what you guys think about it, I've discussed it with a friend but he wasn't really keen on giving his opinion about it. I surmised he didn't really enjoy the direction - I think having watched A Spell to Ward Off the Darkness the day before spoiled it for him.

I personally loved the movie, felt that the photography was astounding and appropriate to the story, which in itself was kind of amazing. The second half of the movie was a better latter-Refn, in every respect. Camerawork was a it on the nondescript side, though.

Also, gearing up to watch the teen Apocalypse Trilogy by Araki, any of you have seen it? how was it?

She believed that if her husband came to their rescue he would die due to his broken leg. And she knew he would never give up until he found her.

So them leaving the trail for him to follow, to her, was idiotic as they had just sentenced him to death.

Opinions on Sion Sono's work? Recently just started watching his films:

> Suicide Club 6/10
> Love Exposure 9.5/10
> Why Don't You Play In Hell? 8/10
> Tokyo Tribe 7/10

What of his should I watch next?

Also made a post in /tv/ a month ago to get a list of essential Japanese cinema, only a couple of films in but so far Seven Samurai and Harakiri are god-tier.

Good try.

First mistake: separate into AFDG and ATVDG.
Second mistake: by acknowledging that you are "just starting this up to see what happens" you are "trying" something new. "Trying is gay" is the law of the land. So tomorrow when you take my first bit of advice, save the rules about memes and shitposting, and make it seem like an established general. That way, when a mouth breather spots your nice logo (ur gonna need new ones for each respective thread) on the catalogue, he doesn't think "gee what a great opportunity to post a meme about Star Wars" he thinks "I must've never noticed this general since I've only been here for 3 weeks"
Third mistake: always give the general thread an edition

I look forward to trying to post in your thread tomorrow, and I really think it could work. Cheers my child

He's pretty cool, as far as I can tell, but then again I've seen only Suicide Club (which I guess you could call a 7.5/10 maybe) and half of Noriko no Shokutaku or something like that. Got Cold Fish ready to go though, seems to look good on paper.

Also, essential "unconventional" Japaneserie I'd rec you, ignore if you already know them:

Shinya Tsukamoto - Tetsuo (I/II/III) / Nightmare Detective / A Snake of June

Takashi Miike - Gozu / Ichi the Killer

Sogo Ishii - Burst City / Electric Dragon 80.000v (really do watch at least this one, it's one of the greatest movies ever to be made and I'm not in any way overhyping it)

The guy who did Ghost in the Shell - Tenshi no Tamago

I don't know if you're familiar with Petzold but all his films feel like short films that are extended to fulfil a feature length runtime. They're really thin constructions, usually thrillers, usually with a twist at the end, that are just meh once you're over and done with them.

The only thing worth watching for is Barbara Hoss. You still might enjoy it though, idk.
>>
>>64232134
Nice to see you've been given a cool list - last time I tried it could as well been a series of links to kurosawa's discography. Don't mind if I copy it.

How did you like Body Hammer? I think it was probably the funniest and most accomplished movie of the trilogy, even if a couple orders of magnitude below the first.

What's the most obscure shit you've ever seen? Doesn't have to be prententious or even good, just maybe a bit above the "me cousin got a camera for his birthday and shat a low budget intimist epic"

For me, I think it has gotta be NAILS, (Gvozdi, otherwise it's hard to find). Shitty Russian gore movie, but weirdly catartic to watch. Also the best use of no-budget computer graphics I've ever seen. Director is Iskanov, of Philosophy of a Knife fame.
