Sure the setpieces were taken from previous star wars most likely to satisfy the fans, but all you need to do is to watch the opening scene to know that this movie is pretty good.
Good characters, wise use of cgi for a sci fi movie, fixing prequels mistakes, adding some new stuff and a lot of symbolism and metaphors to boot.
It's a good, fun, simple space action movie with humor for kids, some teens adventurin/angsting for teens and sophistication and good cinematography for adults.

It's not even a bad movie when you actually stop trying so hard to sound and feel intelligent by being edgy and contrarian and political on the fucking Internet.
Cool things can be noticed like how Kylo Ren is the one who protects Rey from being killed when the Knights of Ren massacre the Jedi temple. It's also interesting how Kylo asks Han for permission to kill him and that scene is very ambigous in terms of if Kylo and Han have an understanding that the audience doesn't.
The new characters have potential as does the new story. I'm not too worried.

2) the movie is about Poe and Finn being lethal weapon in space
3) Ray teams up with them
4) Poe flies the millennium falcon (thus reducing Ray's Mary Sue levels)
5) Capt. Phasma replaces riot gear Tr8 trooper to give her something to do
6) she refuses to lower shields (they knock her out instead)
7) they don't blow up star killer base but destroy its ability to launch an attack
8) kylo almost defeats Ray but she escapes because of the earthquake and chewie showing up
That's basically it. Minor tweaks to the script which would be pretty obvious is Disney wasn't In such a rush to get the movie out. I think another death star and the evil empire basically being the same is kind of lazy but even keeping the main plot the same they could have still made a good movie out of it
