Star Wars 7 is good because it's more self-conscious than the prequels. It touches on some of the same kinds of themes and violence but doesn't take itself so seriously as to be completely tryhard.

He doesn't really give a shit about anything but running away, until he makes a friend (whom makes him later join the big guys) who he thought died. So he meets Rey who he doesn't want to lose as well so he stops being a cowards and becomes the big guy. Rey's only character development in the film is a similar kind of loneliness which moves her into action.

I don't really know how to explain how I feel it is different. Best I can think of how to describe it is the level of C3PO's importance. Most of the characters in the film see him as a bumbling droid who rambles on about useless information and as a result treat him as such. Repeatedly telling the droid to shut up or stop talking. Also the fact that is he a side character and not one of the main characters we are supposed to relate with the heavy lifting of the story's dramatic elements is a difference.
Again that might make no sense and might be an irrelevant point and while I never really enjoyed C3PO I didn't find it as distracting as I did in VII.
