Mace Windu always looked like he was struggling to understand what was going on, and just did whatever the Jedi council decided.
Finn was in way over his head, but atleast he actually had autonomy. He wanted to run as far away as possible, and almost did, but came back to try and help.
I didn't watch the original trilogy. Seeing 1,2, and 3 first ruined any thought of seeing another Lucas directed film.
