It never clicked with me until recently why everyone did such a fucking awful job on the Prequels until I saw that .gif of the cast shooting the Geonosian arena scene, where they were standing on a small patch of sand, with a blue backdrop, swinging their plastic prop swords at nothing. Future fucking Oscar-winner Natalie Portman standing there with a rubber gun in her hand, pretending to shoot it at invisible robots.
When you spend your entire time on that set surrounded by green and blue backgrounds, talking at fucking thin air half the time, and having that bearded mongoloid Lucas telling you shit like "OK, now you're talking to an alien who just told you some sad news. A lot of the CG in the prequels is still pretty good, though I think Episode 1 outside of Jar Jar aged well because it used some more practical effects than the other two. But I find a certain charm in even some of the more dated looking CGI backgrounds or vehicles. It's like when you play those Star Wars games with the FMV's with real actors like Dark Forces or Rebel Assault or finding pleasure in a movie where it's very obvious the actors are standing before matte paintings.
