I remember when the Blockbuster opened in the strip mall at my neighborhood. It was a huge fucking party. We rented Flight of the Intruder and it made me want to be a pilot.

Shame my eyes suck and I didn't qualify for flight training.

I still go to a video store to rent movies at least a couple of times a month and it's nice to have a store that has actual quality movies which Blockbuster was never very interested in storing

Thank you blockbuster, you may have not been perfect, but you made my childhood a little bit better

I'm glad that I never returned Saved! so I will always have a piece of Blockbuster to cherish.
>>

>when you rent a game so many times you realize you could have bought it by then

>Saved!

That was a surprisingly good movie that I had to get dragged to watch at the theater. Same with Mean Girls.

Shame that movies just don't seem fun like that anymore.
>>
>>64170394
Same. I realized that and eventually bought it. Still, Friends and I liked the novelty of going to blockbuster and renting shit and getting snacks, getting out of the house.

Streaming is fucking boring as fuck.
>>
>>64170060
>>64170060
Well, the best feeling was feeling like you afford to watch anything you ever wanted. Then, stupid fees and low availability and shitty service quickly ruined everything.

Besides, rental services still exist. No retard is going back to those stone-age businesses.

There's still a few places in Australia that do it. Not just blockbusters, but there are still video ezys and civic videos. You see them around. The other day I saw a Video Ezy and Blockbuster in the same town, Windang.

Also I guarantee you I could open a successful vhs rental store in Brooklyn or Portland or San Fran. In Australia a business like that in Newtown or whatever the newtown equivalent is in Melbourne would thrive.

Some video stores still do well in Australia but they're becoming much rarer. I think there's less than 100 nationwide left among the 3 big franchises. Quite a few have been propped up by slow and overpriced internet and mining communities. With kiosks becoming more prevalent and numerous streaming options now available I imagine within 2 years they will all be gone.

I feel as though I need to clear some things up about why Blockbuster Video is closing, and why they went chapter 11 in the first place a few years ago

>Blockbuster Video used to be owned by a Jew owned company named Viacom
>Viacom are money-grubbing whores
>Viacom buys all of blockbuster's rentals and merch with loans, instead of profits
>every year use profit to pay off loans, take out new loans to buy new merchandise
>blockbuster decides to split from viacom because they are tyrants
>viacom takes all of blockbuster's profits from that year, but does not pay off the loans
>the loans were taken out under blockbuster's name, not viacom's, so the loans technically belong to blockbuster
>viacom does not tell this to blockbuster corporate
>when blockbuster finds out, there is already a shit ton of interest, and viacom has all of their profits
>desperately try every quarter to pay off loans
>1 mil loan becomes 3 mil then 5 mil, finally tens of millions of dollars are owed
>go chapter 11, file for bankruptcy
>Dish network buys Blockbuster Video, because they want to use the iconic Blockbuster Video logo to sell tv subscriptions, plus wants brick and mortar stores to sell tv subscriptions
>closes unprofitable stores that were still around after chapter 11 closings
>has 300 locations left
>all are profitable
>blockbuster is profitable as a whole again, especially in the North East
>fast forward 2 years to 2013
>Dish decides to go exclusively to streaming
>considers selling BBV
>no fewer than 3 companies are interested in buying
>but Dish wants to keep Blockbuster logo for streaming service, cant do that if they sell the company
>decide to liquidate stores, put 3000 people out of work, all over the rights to a logo
>tell employees they are being laid off AFTER telling the news networks

Blockbuster's problem was it was owned by two shitty fucking corporations.

Loans are used for a business to grow, you keep yourself in negative numbers, but you are expanding with the money you got from said loans. When Viacom left, they still owed a lot of money that was used to invest in the stores, but Blockbuster didn't get the profits they could use to pay that money off and probably because Viacom didn't want to get in trouble at the time of negotiations they purposedly left those debts as a secret to explode on the lap of Blockbuster later on. Not that anon, btw.

Worked at one, even slightly after Dish bought it.

Their first move was deciding to not honor all the GameRush trade in credit everyone had.

>When you trade in games, consoles, or movies they give you credit on a gift card.
>Some people had hn=undreds, some were building up to get a 360 or PS3
>Dish's first move was to not honor the gift cards and cancel all credit
>Instead they gave you 5 free rentals for your lost credit

Only went to BB a few times. Rented there about twice. Last time I was there, it was 2009. Live in NYC, BB was too expensive and we had to take a bus to the nearest one. Lucky for us, we had a mom and pop video store a block away from where I live. From the late 90s to mid 2000s, I remember Fridays, mom would rent 3 movies, one kids or finny movie for us, 2 horror movies for her which we ended up watching with her. In the 90s, she would always buy the cheesy 80s horror movies and I enjoyed them. Reading the back covers of those movies, looking at the PS1 games. The store for a time had 3 arcade machines. I remember the back part that had curtains and those cowboy era saloon doors that had the pornos. I even went there a few times as a kid and teen. They shut it down in late 06 around this time when I just turned 17. It was pretty awesome. These kids will never know the videostore feeling.

Fuck them in their asses. The net does everything they refused to better.
>>
>>64180619
Cheap to collect and fun and unique? Maybe just owning them is enough to him and doesn't even watch them.

Hard for me to watch VHS quality stuff nowadays.
>>
>>64180510
I buy Blu-Ray for a lot of my movies, but the reason I buy so many VHS is because of how cheap it is. Most of the places I get them from sell them for 5 cents a piece.

Some movies, like Zombie and Maximum Overdrive, I can't find in any other medium so VHS is the way to go. Same with the Star Wars movies, the VHS releases are one of the only ways to get the original theatrical cuts.

Otherwise it's just because I like experiencing some movies in VHS. For example I have the blu-ray of Ginger Snaps which is a fantastic horror movie, but it's "comfier" watching the VHS version. Godzilla movies maintain that cheesy feel (Again, I have all the blu-rays if I'm ever in the mood for picture quality) and horror movies for the most part benefit from the low quality images.
