>Military historian and author Stephen Ambrose, at a special screening of the film for him, had to ask for the screening to be halted 20 minutes in as he couldn't handle the intensity of the opening. After composing himself outside for a few minutes, he was able to return to the screening room and watch the film to its conclusion.

Then you will like his one. It definitely has the typical Spielberg manipulation of your opinion and a fairly biased perspective but it's forgiven under the guise of good characters and the backdrop he creates being more impressive than the story itself.

I honestly think it's going to be one of the most timeless and undateable in history. It was made over a decade and a half ago and it looks like it could have come out this year. The camera work and direction is done in the vein of ultra-realism so it masks how ridiculously grim the effects and squibs are (just pay attention to the amount of detail put into every set piece in the bodies strewn about and the weapons going off in the background of some shots.)

It's in no way the best war movie ever made, but from a purely technical standpoint it comes damn close. Mostly because the message is quite simple and the D-Day intro is really the only part that's psychologically challenging. But it is a film that I would say is mandatory if you're going to have an opinion of cinema's depiction of war throughout history and different cultures.

>Sergeant Horvath: "That's quite a view."
>Captain Miller: "Yes it is. Quite a view."

I remember watching this in the theater when I was 18 and that part actually got to me - hard. To this day it's the most intense movie experience I've ever had - it's just not the same when you watch it at home on your TV though, and everyone who saw it after the home video release knew what was coming anyway. But imagine sitting in the theater, expecting a more or less run-off-the mill action movie, and getting THIS - I'm getting goose bumps just thinking about it!

>>64165008
Just because it looks good doesn't mean it is good. It's technically a very well and professionally made movie, but it has nothing interesting to say. People just think it's deep because it looks gritty. In reality it's vapid, generic. Every protagonist gets a long dramatic death scene, thousands of inept stormtrooper-like enemies are destroyed without any tension, it might as well be a John Wayne movie from the 60's.

friendly reminder that this movie turns an actual war crime into a heroic moment
>>
It was certainly important because it pioneered a change in the portrayal of war. Before that, especially during the cold war, war was always glorious, never dirty or a mess. This stopped working eventually. This movie made it look ugly yet retained the same glorification of the American military and the assumption that they are always fighting for a just cause. Because it's hidding beneath dirty faces and tons of fake blood it can pretend to be anti-war while in reality the message is the same as before. It set new standards in that regard.

Axis soldiers in North Africa were actually instructed to surrender rather than engage the Maori battalion in hand to hand combat if necessary.

>The actor, who plays Sergeant Horvath, was heavily addicted to heroin prior to filming Saving Private Ryan in 1997. In order to keep the movie in line, and to force Sizemore to kick the habit, Spielberg swore to Sizemore that if the actor tested positive for drugs on-set—even on the last day of shooting—“he would fire me on the spot and shoot all 58 days that I'd worked over again with someone else.”

I agree Churchill bears *some* responsibility for the Dardanelles disaster, but if Admiral Fisher hadn't been a pussy by staying quiet, and instead grabbed Lord Kitchener by the scruff of his neck and forced him to agree to a joint Navy-infantry operation, it might have gone a hell of a lot better.BTW, Kitchener was so fucking cheap, he refused to lend airplanes to the Navy for aerial reconnaissance.
