It's great until the third act with the einsatszgruppen and the village. Up until then the Germans are depicted as sort of inhuman, unknowable arbiters of life and death. They're never even seen clearly, save the valkyrie-like shot of the pin-up girl bomber pilot. After they get to the barn the director can't help but clarify their evilness by making them haphazardly violent evil persons instead of evil "things"
