Honestly, this movie had so much potential that got bogged down and wasted in the social commentary. And that wouldn't even be such a terrible thing if the social commentary wasn't idiotic and didn't lack and consideration for consequences. It's like, did anyone at any point of the filming stop and say to themselves - "Hey, why is Damon trying to send medical centers down to earth when the entire reason earth went to shit is because of overpopulation? Isn't poor health the one thing that might save the earth in the long term? And what's going to happen when everybody can come to Elysium? What bothered me is that the film portrays the poor and suffering masses as completely infallible. in no case in our real world with real-world sensibilities do wealthy people and nations turn their back on the suffering masses
There is literally a charitable industrial complex on our planet where there are too many foundations, charities, and nations that rely on the generosity of others. There is literally so much money and sympathy for the third-world that it has become a black hole to dump money into
There is literally no reason for a society that has high-tech machines that can just remove illnesses from people not to appear in the third-world. We see Matt Damon's character working at a machine shop or factory or whatever, and they don't care that he gets radiation poisoning or whatever. Wouldn't it be in their best interests to keep a good, skilled worker alive?
More than that, people in Vietnam, the Philippines, China, etc... would sell their souls to have a job that we deem as a 'sweatshop' job. Jobs with the big faceless companies pay well in these nations. To us in the west they pay them beans, but in their currency, they make a decent living.

This movie was so left wing that I honestly question somewhat if it wasn't actually right wing.
I looked at some of the "viral" websites they put up for the movie, and they showed that the Earth well and truly was a shithole in this movie's reality. Of course people would want to get off it as soon as possible. And while it sucks, sometimes there aren't enough lifeboats for everyone. But even then, the sites talked about how there were plans to make more space stations and places just like it. The obvious end goal was to get off the desertifying rock that was the planet, and move into space.
What was gonna happen now though after the end of the movie? These people were gonna drain Elysium's resources dry, and soon it'll be a derelict husk, and then there'd be no safe place for humanity.
