This is the biggest play it safe movie of any franchise ever, and lacks any sort of depth whatsoever. The characters are hallow, no chances were taken, everything is coincidental, girl & black dude are magically great everything they try, etc. Basically no storytelling or world building.
So in sum, its pretty fucking easy if you're making a movie for it to not be terrible if you don't try or do anything. Its basically the same as saying "well, I didn't die of a car crash today because I didn't leave my house."

Good choice on their part.
Confidence in Star Wars was pretty much destroyed by the prequels. The knee jerk reaction was that Disney was going to fuck this up (which was how people felt until Disney started releasing trailers).
If they'd done something completely new, yeah, it could have been good, but it'd still get mixed reactions because people want Star Wars to be Star Wars. Playing it close to the good movies, the ones people like, is the smartest thing they could have done.
Personally, I'm glad they did it. The movie is very comfortable to watch. It feels like you're watch A New Hope (because you pretty much are) and that's a really good thing.
