>Star Wars will never have clear well-positioned shots like this

Why is having clear easy to follow shots loathed in modern cinema? Why does everything have to be a fucking tracking shot?

JJ would have a panic attack. The Falcon should be charging at ramming speed.

Are there any good recs for movies similar to Star Wars not so much in terms of plot, but mood/pacing? Would that pretentious Chinese movie Lucas knowingly knocked off be a good fit?

Same reasons modern documentaries can't have slow tracking shots and more than 5-10 seconds of a single scene before moving on to the next

Maybe Abrams could bear it if we saw a planet explode in the background.
I think it's either that or ramming speed as you said if it's up to Abrams.

they never really establish the starkiller base, it just kind of shows up and blows up a few planets with no real consequences. In ANH, when Alderaan goes kaboom it changes the immediate goals of Obi-wan and Luke since they were trying to get there, and Leia winds up going whole-hog into the Rebellion. When the Republic Senate explosed in TFA, nobody in the movie seems to care at all. And why should the audience, who only cares about the Resistance?
>>
>>64136428
Yeah it does mate. It's storytelling with the camera. If the Starkiller base had been shown with some menacing looming shots then we might've liked it more.
>>
>>64136573

They never define the force strength of the two sides overall. I guess the Death Star is a strategic asset, but maybe it's like the U.S. Navy where even if you succeeded in taking down a carrier, then they'll then send 1000 warships after you. Or you think the Rebels are screwed when their base is raided, but then in the next movie they have these ships that seem about equal to Star Destroyers. Also, why don't the rebels ever consider stealing the Death Star and using it to destroy Imperial targets (or to bargain with the Empire)?
>>
That looks horrible. It's so bad it's literally unintentional comedy. Are the people on this board serious? You are the worst people I've ever fucking witnessed in my life.

>>
So I got hold of ANH despecialised edition, and as my Brother is out of town for Christmas used his house and his massive 50 inch TV to watch it. Just me alone, on a comfy chair right in front of the screen

Holy fucking shit. Do the same and remember how great the originals were. An amazing, well paced, self contained story. Believable, likeable protagonists. Guinness and Cushing totally nailing it and giving the whole thing a touch of authenticity and class. A massive space station that is genuinely sinister and threatening, planets that we actually are made a little familiar with getting blown up (the reaction of Obi Wan gives far more impact than seeing people we don't know on a planet we don't know). No pandering, no fanservice.

That sense of adventure. Luke, and us with him, slowly learning about the Force from Obi Wan. The chemistry and the humour working well. TFA doesn't come anywhere close.

too bad the new movie only had, like, two really cool shots (the long shot of the crashed Star Destroyer and the Stormtroopers in the drop pod)... also they were both at the start, then JJ shifts into maximum overdrive and shakes the camera 1million times for the next 90 minutes
>>
>>64138239
>Maybe they didn't have the shields up since they were surprised by the escape.
They had enough time to start shooting at them, they had enough time to raise their shields.

i blame jason bourne. those movies made the shakycam/ACTIONcam en vogue and we haven't looked back ever since.

hell, i remember matt damon on some talk show promoting bourne 3 ("it doesn't suck") and he spoke of the one bad review he found saying "CAN YOU GET A FREAKING STEADICAM PLEASE?"

so uhhhh yeah...JJ made good $$$ turning star trek into a pretty modern action flick....and seeing as star wars was already way more of that than star trek, it's no surprise that he's sticking with what works with star wars. he put in a few token "nice shots" for the cinemaphiles out there (apocalypse now ftw!) but really those were little nods to ppl who like that so he could get back to the can't miss action!

you know that taco bell commercial where the restaurant is chock full of nerds in SW costumes and then the normie couple walks in and gets the evil-eyes from everyone until the chick flashes a lightsaber hanging from her belt?

the movie is made for those normies, not the marks in the costumes. they'll always have those hopeless tissuefuckers no matterwhat they do. and focus groups show that the nornies of the mid-2010s like their bourne identity style action and slick fast paced "FUN" crap, so that's what they're gonna get.....

...except the technicality is that the setup around all that action is gonna be STAR WARS so it makes billions of dollars because its STAR WARS and it's prolly the most valuable IP in cinema for a reason.

If JJ did that scene there would be a huge green tractor beam laser struggling to hold onto the Millinium falcon as the Han was desperately screaming orders at everyone in a last ditch attempt to try to escape. We'd be rapidly cutting between Death Star command screaming "hold onto that ship! Don't let them get away", and Han going "Damn, they've almost got us! Obviously context is important. Riding on horses you expect your vision to bounce around. Standing still while things explode in the background, you wouldn't. When J.J, Whedon and the other hacks making modern blockbusters pull that shit they're motivation is to keep the ADHD generation from pulling out their phones.

Sucks that /tv/ doesn't allow sound with webms, otherwise we could talk about how the score helps to punctuate the OT shots and round out the scene. VII had a bad soundtrack it hardly used, so even if it had great shots they would still be underwhelming.

They shouldn't have even been able to leave the hanger bay because of shields. They made a big deal about Obi having to disable it for the crew to escape in A New Hope. The only thing I don't really get is why would you cast Sydow in a totally throwaway role that barely has any relevance at all.

A couple of lines in and he's toast, has no relevance on anything and generally can be wiped from the script with nothing lost.
Why would you even include this character in your script since he has such a miniature role.
Not to mention that it seems he has some knowledge of the larger events in the saga but it never amounts to anything.

>tfw you first watched them so young you couldn't appreciate it
I've known every beat of those movies my entire life. Although I've started to appreciate them from a cinematic point of view as well now, I'll never be able to have any virgin moments watching them. It's too deep in my blood.

That clip is from the theatrical version. They've been there since 1977.

>dudes in full body armour and helmet
>In a vacuum
I fail to see the problem?

>They shouldn't have even been able to leave the hanger bay because of shields. They made a big deal about Obi having to disable it for the crew to escape in A New Hope.

Obi-Wan disabled the tractor beam, not the shields.

Because it looks stupid. How does gravity even work?

ANH
>>
>>64143073
a vacuum doesn't mean there is no gravity
>>
>>64143073
The Star Wars universe has artificial gravity, among other nonsense. How do you think everyone walked around all the spaceships this time? How is this the thing that is bothering you, not the sub-light speed lasers, laser swords, magic physic powers or FTL engines? The thing that bugs you is people doing a spacewalk?
>>
>>64143073
How does it work anywhere in any of those ships?

Yes.

I'm just saying it looks bad, and they add nothing to the scene.

Anyone have a webm of the first person going into the trenches from ANH? I fucking love it.
>>
>>64141424
The police car chase in taken 3 is edited perfectly
>>
>>64141946
If you force yourself to forget that this is Star Wars, at no point during this clip would you realize you're watching an actual movie. It's just a cutscene from a videogame. It's amazing, actually.
>>
>>64143224
>Those 3 frames where you can see it transition from the exterior model to the trench model
Fucking beautiful. The craftsmanship on those things is amazing. A lot of the dogfighting in ANH is a little to slow imo, but that shot in particular is incredibly exciting.

Is Lucas officially a better director than Abrams?
>>
>>64143467
1977 Lucas > Abrams > 1999 Lucas
>>
>>64143467
No because all of his misteps were fixed by amazing editing, and when you watch the prequels where he was the editor, you can tell a noticeable drop in quality.
>>
>>64143504
Fuck no Abrams is 100x worse than 1999 George lucas

CGI cutscenes in videogames today look more real than the prequels, they aged like milk.
>>
>>64143184
yes it does. it makes it a habitable, real space. sure it make no sense, but it gives you a sense of scale. people exist here instead of stark empty space.

id be ok with it if they said the artificial gravity and size allows it to have it own atmosphere. personally its my preferred explanation. well, that and oxygen rich nebulae. i miss open faced space operas.

>It's the ship that made the Kessel Run in less than twelve parsecs

I see no problem with that sentence m8
>>
>>64143504
1977 Lucas > Abrams and friends = 1999 Lucas
>>
>>64141424
NO. THEY WON'T
>>
>>64143587

I agree. The way I see it, the Kessel Run starts at one place and ends at another. Han used the Millenium Falcon to navigate some treacherous shortcut that reduced his distance traveled to only 12 parsecs. This also implies he completed it with a low time, but shaving off the distance was most important because the Kessel Run was more about maneuvering than raw speed.
>>
>>64143562
Pretty soon, this will likely look dated as well. That's how almost all CGI works.

it only makes sense in the EU where you have to dodge black holes or some shit and thus being fast enough to cut corners while escaping their gravity wells cuts time and distance off of the run...

if I recall correctly. a parsec is a unit of distance after all but Solo phrases it to sound like a unit of time to the layperson

(the real problem here is that parsecs are based upon Astronomical Units which shouldn't exist in Star Wars lol)
>>
>>64143655
at lightspeed all speed is the speed of light. time becomes irrelevant. has to be measured in distance
>>
>>64143587
Han is clearly bullshitting. Parsec is used to measure distance when he's talking about how fast he did something. Obi-Wan gives him an incredulous look and Han quickly changes the subject.

>>64143759

Hyperdrive is drastically FTL tho :^)
>>
>>64136763
At that point, they're just statistics. In the context of the movie, why care about these trillion lives when the only people who matter can be counted on one hand?
>>
One death (Han) is a tragedy, one trillion (all those planets) is a statistic.
