Really wasn't that good outside of the cinematography and sound design.

Also, I'm not sure how it could possibly be construed as "feminist propaganda" considering the female lead gets bullied and fucked over in literally every scene.

You guys are deluded. Blunt is not yet strong as any man hero ever, but she's definitely a won battle and a step forward for feminists. >In the end she's actually made to look like a martyr, she's still THE good guy, the men all of them are dirty scums.
No, she's made to look like a naive idealist. Not sure how she's a martyr when she literally compromises her morals in the final scene to save her own life. The film doesn't portray Blunt as anything other than a woman who makes impulsive, stubborn decisions and doesn't understand the world she's been thrown into.

The atmosphere and the approach of show-don't tell pulled me over. In the beginning, there is a five-minute car ride into Juárez. There is no dialouge. It's a simple car ride. But this event alone tells you more than any information dump ever would. I enjoy that approach to film. The ending had a similar scene with the shootout in the cave where the dialouge took backseat for what was shown.
>>
>>64123563
>The plot and reveal weren't original or shocking
they don't need to be shocking to be good. It felt original to me, what other movie plays like this?

For me, I liked it for
>gritty realism
>cinematography is top tier
>you can cut the tension with a knife
>Emily Blunt's character works as a fish out of water, and not some crazy feminist hero.
The whole highway scene feels as though you were witnessing the event from her eyes.
>strong overarching theme

Oh God this useless fucking statement again. Here's something to think about; A good character isn't a "deep" character. Are you serious? The only party it helps is the US government. You think the CIA gives a shit about Mexicans killing each other in Juarez? The FBI exists and operates as it does for a reason. Obviously the agency wasn't designed to combat global, multi-billion dollar criminal syndicates (which is why it generally doesn't).

It becomes feminist when it has nothing to offer in the way of leadership by example other than that you can trust women to be logical and principled--if that were true marriage and a society to enforce it would never have been needed. Also the focus on "bullying in the workplace/home" and "women have it tough", "emotions don't hinder they help" memes are the bread and butter of feminism.

It's axiomatically feminist without showcasing it.

Yes, she may not agree with their methods but once she knew who she was dealing with everything will be swept under the rug. 3/4 of the movie is about Blunt being kept in the dark until her nigga stepped in and they gave him a half-assed answer.

He should have told her that he's CIA and he's going to fuck up the cartels so bad and she's free to fuck off if she can't do it. Instead Brolin's character just fucked around with shitty excuses even though Blunt knows that she's in spooky special ops.

The "need to know basis" cliche killed whatever little teamwork, trust and camaraderie they had.

Do you really believe a FBI agent would turn down a once in a lifetime operation with the real big boys even though they're just there to cover their asses legally?

It hate how in the end Del Toro he straight up tells her she reminds him of her daughter. I don't know, it's just a small bit I'm nitpicky about. It wasn't necessary. It was already perfect when he told her she looks like a scared little girl (after him telling her she reminds him of someone he loves very much earlier in the film then after us finding out what happened to his daughter).

I know it's not a big deal whatsoever, but it kind of ruined the bit for me.

Its also important because hes basically saying his daughter was a perfect girl ignorant of sin until sin destroyed her in a vat of acid, which was what he was going to do to her if she didn't sign that paper and accept the escape that hes giving her that her daughter didn't get.
>>
>>64137945
He wasn't going to shoot her, he just spooked her off
>>
>>64137879
I know. I'm just commenting on the fact that the first line of him saying she reminded her of someone he lives dearly, earlier in the film, would have had more weight without him holding our hand through the connection by outright saying she reminds him of his daughter at the end. It was implied as soon as he said the line about her looking like a scared little girl or whatever. Just a small thing that made me pout.

But does Emily Blunt get violated?
>>
>>64138385
They have nothing to gain if she dies and the paper she signed is basically paperweight, a last minute pottery since she was doing things by the book

If she was being a burden they could have left them both and claim that they were KIA by the cartels

Even if Josh's character was chaotic neutral he was quick to react when he figured out that only the nigga came back and quickly went back to look for her, when she punched him he could have shot and injured her but instead he locked her shot torso to prevent further bleeding while explaining why they have to do this shit

tl;dr Blunt should have been sent to the Farm instead of hopping immediately with the CIA

Juarez is hell on earth. At least ISIS doesn't skin people alive and write "TRAITOR" in the streets using the dead person's entrails

ISIS is despicable, but they have nothing to lose. When money is involved, people will stop at nothing to get it back

Oh yeah man, I'm really glad the dialogue took a backseat to the action in a shootout scene. It's really rare to see that happen.

No but seriously, the movie was shit. No amount of desert cinematography and shoehorned political messages can save this turd of a movie. Del Toro was the only half decent thing about the movie.
>>
>>64143647
>Oh yeah man, I'm really glad the dialogue took a backseat to the action in a shootout scene
Missed the point. It wasn't just the action. It was the chilling build-up. And it wasn't even an action scene. It felt like one but it was more about suspense. The viewer is kept in the dark in the tunnels.
