Its biggest sin was being largely untrue to the people involved. MLK suddenly spiels a tactic to the student activists that I am about 90% convinced was Bayard Rustin's idea and execution because that's what Rustin was around for.
The film also conveniently omits how Rustin was kept in the background at all times because MLK was sure a queer would ruin things despite being one of the most competent labor organizers of the 20th.
It is frequently necessary to collapse characters and events when making an 80 page script but it felt more like the writers either didn't know the facts or thought no one would notice MLK suddenly being this canny Jew out of nowhere and then never acting that way again in the story.
