How come they blew up the entire Republic galactic space, but no body seemed to care?
>>
>>64078360
This "Death Star 2.0" is non sense. It's totally childish just making things bigger to just destroy more. Whats about the sun energy? Even worse, it should take years to consume the sun, not just some minutes.

The worst film in the series. Only few things in the movie can be saved

The Resistance has about 20 X-wings to face any galactic threat. None of the systems in the Republic have any ships to help out in their defense. There was no spy network to detect that the First Order was building a planet sized weapon that can fire energy through hyperspace. Basically, no one in the galaxy gave a flying fuck about anything except a handful of people calling itself the Resistance.

And why was the Empire bad?
>>
>>64078360
It's these unexplained plot points that irk me, like

why is there a republic AND a resistance?
why doesn't the republic have an army?
where the fuck did the first order get a shitload of soldiers after the empire was buttblasted?

There's more but I can't remember them. I can easily ignore at how adept Rey and Finn are at combat and shit cos it's a kid's fantasy film but things like why the hell is there a map to Luke are more troublesome.
>>
>>64080741
Are you retarded?
People use 1.1, 1.2 and so on because the 1.0 was changed, but it is still "1", the same thing.

Starkiller is a whole different thing, even if it was just like the Death Star, it would still be 2.0.

>>64080841
You can clearly see in the flashback that Rey has that Luke puts his hand on top of R2-D2, he was probably giving him the map in that moment
>>
>>64080841
There was a map to Luke because obviously Luke wanted to be found. He had programmed R2 to reveal the rest of the map after the Force awakens in Rey. The first part of the map was probably from Luke too, to spark interest.
>>
>>64078360
Y'all bringing up good points. It's unthinkable that the Resistance is this group of 20 or so airships, likewise for the first order huge base. It ain't very realistic.
But it does not really detract from the moovie itself. Plus, there is a pretty simple answer to your woes. It was that way, because it is so. You are pushing your understanding of what an army is on this completely different universe that has nothing to do with ours.
>>
>>64078566
There are thousands of inhabited planets in the republic alone.

Also wouldn't it take a long ass time to destroy every planet in the galaxy that opposes you, even with a super death star?

>>
>>64081682

>>
>>64080841
The Republic has a fleet of military ships, they are destroyed along with the planets. They mention this briefly and you can see a few ships burning up on screen

The Resistance seemed like it existed because the Republic didn't want to openly wage war on the First Order. I think they covertly provided support to the Resistance though. Hux suggests this in his Hitler speech
>>
>>64081656
Nope. They already had the plans. Finn just pointed out the weak spot. Why they had the plans, knew it existed, and still had every single republic asset in the hosnian system? JJ is a hack
>>
>>64078837

Because the people were loyal to Sheev
>>
>>64081726

The recon report came in after the shot (either they calculated where it had to be based on the shot's trajectory or just had Finn tell them where). The plans they had seemed to be mostly visual since they didn't know what/where anything was without Finn's direction.
>>
>>64081717
>The map shows which planet to go to. Also, wasn't Luke in an uncharted area?

That moment felt so stupid when they the piece slotted into the main map. It was such a tiny area and it was in 3D. Like they couldn't search the area that was missing (ignoring that R2D2 was in "low power mode")?
>>
>>64081717
Everything is charted. You can't hyperspace around if it isnt. This is made pretty clear in ep 2 and ep 4. Even if someone had removed a single planet from the databases again, bb8s map had like an eigth of the galaxy with it. And yet now... sorry, we cant find any of that. Its stupid bullshit

>Maybe the republic chose not to have military and uses a mercenary group

maybe that is the case. but if it is, it's fucking retarded and terrible writing, and either way the movie completely fails to explain whether or not that's the case or what the hell the nature of the relationship between the Resistance and the Republic is at all.

in the original trilogy, the balance of power in the galaxy was immediately made completely obvious and intuitive by dialogue, plot, visual cues and the opening title crawl all working in harmony.

TFA fails to elucidate the audience on the state of things and we're expected to swallow the pill that the New Republic is once again the underdog and the Empire which was supposedly dismantled after the events of RotJ somehow managed to build a battle station 50 times the size of the Death Star in the same amount of time it took to complete the Death Star, and somehow the neighboring Republic was just completely fucking ignorant of this project. Bullshit. it's contrived and nonsensical and confusing and it seriously detracts from the quality of the film.

we're supposed to accept the status of the galaxy being reverted to a state similar to that in ANH because "muh soft reboot" but the movie just fails to convey a plausible explanation. you might not have noticed it, but your brain did
>>
>>64081496
yes, it would also be pointless; who wants to rule over nothing?
>>
Did nobody watch the fucking movie? It explained that the Resistance is a covertly-funded insurgent group fighting in First Order controlled space. The New Republic is currently in a treaty/ceasefire with the First Republic.

And I really doubt that was Coruscant that blew up. How the fuck could they see that? There are probably dozens of "city-worlds".
>>
>>64081717
Luke is on earth.
>>
>>64083709
Its pretty straight forward. The rebellion and the empire had a ceasefire after the events of rotj. The first order decided otherwise and in secret and have slowly been building while the ineptitude of the new republic allowed it to happen. Leia said fuck that and formed the resistance to go around new republic to get shit done.

All this can be pieced together by watching the movie and having a brain.
>>
>>64080646
They'll either make a death-galaxy or a black hole gun.
>>
>>64081721
This is more or less accurate, the New Republic didn't really seem to give a flying fuck about the New Order so Leia went off and made the Resistance as a group devoted to monitoring/fighting the New Order.

Not that this is explained by TFA at all.

It would've been better (and retardedly easy) to lay that out in the opening crawl.

But still, it's hard to perceive the first order as a splinter faction of the empire when said first order was able to create a much more powerful superweapon.

It's obvious that in the writing there was a conflict between JJ Abrams wanting an ANH reboot, and what the current situation was supposed to be after ROTJ. It's messy and lazy.
>>
Why not just build a dozen death stars instead of one giant sunkiller?

Like, I seriously don't get what makes the sunkiller so much better.
>>
So, after the Battle of Yavin, the Rebellion said mission accomplished, declared the Republic restored, and then sat on their asses and let imperial remnants regroup, operate star destroyers, steal children to create a new army of storm troopers and build a weapon of mass destruction that just wiped out their capital star system, kill and oppress people, while the Resistance gets only unofficial support?

The Republic deseved to be wiped out for sheer incompetence.
>>
>>64085236
What I don't get is that if it has the ability to eat a sun in a couple of hours, and it can conceivably move around from system to system to recharge, then why would blowing up planets be its primary weapon?
>>
>>64085236
And the sunkiller only has a few shots before the sun is drained and the place freezes over!

Why would the New Republic, as the now-accepted democratic government of the galaxy, just trust the Empire and remnants not to seek revenge?

You need a fucking standing army to defend your shit no matter how peaceful and "progressive" you think you are. This movie pitches the Republic as space progressives and simultaneously demonstrates how fucking stupid they are
>>
>>64085618

Just because the emperor died, it doesn't mean that the admirals etc that were indoctrinated to the cause would leave their post and just go have a vacation at the bikini planet. There is still highly motivated and hierarchal organization left behind with soldiers programmed from birth to follow blindly what ever the higher ups feel like doing.

is the starkiller base is the outer rim? isnt that pretty far away from the core worlds?
>>
>>64085985
>>64086140
This is pretty much the problem with that scene. If the starkiller needs a sun to fire, it has to move between systems. Why would it fire from the other side of the galaxy? And takodana is about 10000 lightyears from the hosnian system, it makes no sense for the beam and explosion to be visible from takodana. Fucking JJ.

It would make sense if takodana and hosnian prime were in the same system...
>>
>>64086140
yea, starkiller base is in first order territory which is the outer rim and unknown regions

takonda is in the mid rim

hosnian is in the core

that scene makes absolutely no sense according to the lore
>>
>>64086245
>This is pretty much the problem with that scene. If the starkiller needs a sun to fire, it has to move between systems. Why would it fire from the other side of the galaxy?

this isn't really an issue because presumably it can move from star system to star system to recharge and the beam uses hyperspace to traverse the long distances. what makes starkiller scary is the fact that it can be anywhere in the galaxy and still destroy any planet at will, no need to be in the same system and possibly get attacked by a fleet running defense.

what made no sense is how anybody but the people on starkiller base and in the hosnian system saw the beam and the planet destruction.
>>
>>64086313
Yeah, the fact that it could destroy a star system from anywhere just makes it a ridiculously OP asset. But it's still logical.

The easy way to fix this would be to retcon the map and say takodana is in the hosnian solar system, and the planets destroyed were actually hosnian prime and its moons.
