We have this main villain named Snoke, who has thus far made no reference at all to the Galactic Empire and is a completely new villain without any backstory with a face/disposition we've seen from the 1st movie.
We don't necessarily know what he looks like (the image/holo could be fake), yet as far as villains of he doesn't, thus far have the same appeal that Palpatine is.

I know. The reason the reveal in Empire is so powerful is because you never see it coming- in fact the dialogue up until that point actively tries to make you believe Vader is a separate person that murdered Luke's father.
They explained Han was Kylo's dad about 12 times before the shocking "reveal" so it didn't matter.
It's like the studio knows WHAT people liked about the originals, but have absolutely 0 concept as to WHY. It was the same thing with Darth Maul and Darth Vader. Vader was this incideous force of nature we'd learned to hate and fear over the course of three movies, so when he's finally killed by Luke it's a huge triumphant moment.
Conversely with Darth Maul was introduced he was on all the posters, he was in all the commercials and trailers and he was introduced as if he was going to be the prequel's version of Darth Vader. What we got was about 15 minutes of screen time, 3 minutes of backstory, and 2 lines of dialogue. They killed him in his first appearance with almost no explanation of who he was, so his death was about as impactful as any nameless storm trooper's.
These writers are incredible, they have the picture of what people already like and they can't even trace it.

Snooki was dumb but I have to get on the movie's side on this one.
Kylo's identity is revealed early on because they where not going for the surprise factor with that one.
This is because Kylo is more than Darth Vader in terms of relevance in the trilogy, he's one of the main protagonists, so they wanted to establish him early on, as opposed to having a major tweest reveal.
The only mediocre twist is Han's death.
