I was watching Haywire the other day for the first time since it was in the cinema and it struck me that if you handled a female bond in the same way her character is handled it would work perfectly fine.

There's nothing wrong with it if you're old enough to remember life before the turn of the century. It tries to balance the post Bourne Craig movies with the sensibilities of the older movies and while there are some missteps it largely succeeds.
Most people's complaints are about things that have been in the movies for decades as if Bond has or ever will be above that sort of thing.
