Action movies today just can't keep up the suspense.
Even after killing half a dozen guys you still think John could be taken out at any moment by anyone on agruber's team. Typical action movies today are all flash for the gunfights/fight scenes but most bad guys are just practice dummies.

John doesn't feel vulnerable because we think he'll actually get killed, he feels vulnerable because he gets more and more hurt with glass in his feet and a sweatier and dirtier tank-top etc, which grounds the whole thing.
Most action movies have the hero have twenty flesh-wounds that he magically survives instead, which just doesn't work.
