What are your hopes for it? What other anthology films do you want to see?
They say it'll be the grittiest film yet, so I'm hoping for near-zero Jedi involvement, and just a bunch of down-trodden, desperate Rebel fighters going on what was basically a suicide mission as a last gasp attempt to turn the tide of the war.
I want it to be a PG-13 Saving Private Ryan in space.
As far as other anthology films, I would like one about bounty hunters and their culture. Or something about The Old Republic. Or a live-action adaptation of Shatterpoint.
Could anyone fill me in with details? All I've seen is the promo pic. In what time is this going to be set? Are there going to be known characters on it?

Its set between 3 and 4. It's about people stealing the plans to the Death Star. I don't know if it's suppose to be the plans to build the death star or the inside details on the Death Star that allows the rebels to destroy it in A New Hope, but it's one of those.
The main characters are all Rebel soldiers. The only confirmed known characters returning is a digitally inserted Tarkin. I've heard some stuff that we might get a Darth Vader cameo.
It's directed by Gareth Edwards, the guy who did 2014 Godzilla, and has a bredy gud cast and crew.

Felicity Jones's character is Rey's mother.
Rogue One will introduce and get us invested in her 6 months before Episode VIII comes out.
Episode VIII will have an ASM 2-style prologue/flashback opening scene that explains why Jones's character and Luke abandoned Rey on Jakku, and possibly kills her off, leaving Luke as a damaged, grieving widower.

I love the concept of the anthology movies to expand the lore and universe of Star Wars, but when they are being used to expand on already expanded on characters, it feels pointless. Seriously the last thing I want is them to waste time and recorces on a Fucking Han Solo film.

My only real hope for Rogue One and other anthology films going forward is that they truly expand the star wars universe. The main Episode films have essentially done nothing but shrink it. Everyone is related to everyone, Vader built C3PO, Chewbacca and Yoda are old friends, Han's kid is the new big-bad for the new trilogy, etc... It's fucking annoying.

I would love to see a film from the Empire's perspective where our protagonists are flawed anti-heroes that maybe aren't the greatest of people but have some redeeming qualities to them and we get to see the inner struggle of the Empire as an organization that just wants the galaxy to live in peace, but can't seem to figure out how to accomplish that without just murdering billions of people.

Man that mid-late 90's revivial of the original Star Wars films and the EU surge that created all of those video games and toys was so damn great. The special editions were a mistake but it was a pretty damn great time to be a kid. All of my friends had the action fleet toys, we had enough x-wings, y-wings, a-wings, b-wings, and tie variants to do 8v8 battles on the playground. Everyone was playing rogue squadron and dark forces and shadows of the empire.

There were actually 2 different kinds of TIE Fighters in TFA, but that's a technicality. I really wish there had been at least 1 other class of rebel fighter to match the mixed x-wing / y-wing squadrons from Ep. IV.
