How about this? In his time alone, Luke has decided that the Jedi are a sham (possibly due to Kylo ruining everything he built in like two seconds.) So he himself has embraced the dark side and trains Rey as such, while Kylo turns from the dark, realizing due to the events in TFA that it can't possibly be stronger. The final movie sees the characters on opposite sides.

He's obviously conflicted as to who he really is and who he wants to be. You can see that killing his father was the right way to "badassery" to him but it obviously effected his senses enough to bring his guard down long enough to be shot in the hip.
