reminder: Lucas 1-6 are the only Star Wars movies
>>
Yet they wont make this trash a board because they get handouts from disney
>>
Do they not understand the concept of brand fatigue?
>>
>>64019325
Problem is people don't seem to tire of brand. Look at the Marvel movies - there's been how many and people continue to shovel money out to watch them.

This honestly wouldn't be too much of an issue, except that people seem to ONLY want brand-named films now. Marvel, Star Wars... soon Disney will be the only production company left in Hollywood. The only original films will come from Independent directors, and the only movies that make money will be franchise films, sequels, prequels, etc.

Sad times to be alive if you're a film snob.
>>
>And if the people at the Walt Disney Company, which bought Lucasfilm for $4 billion in 2012, have anything to say about it, the past four decades of Star Wars were merely prologue. They are making more. A lot more. The company intends to put out a new Star Wars movie every year for as long as people will buy tickets. Let me put it another way: If everything works out for Disney, and if you are (like me) old enough to have been conscious for the first Star Wars film, you will probably not live to see the last one. It’s the forever franchise.

Well I thought that was obvious. It'll be like the MCU. Rogue one will be released in December 2016, then the next 'big' Star Wars in 2017, followed by Han Solo origin in 2018. Both spin-off movies has the potential to start off ANOTHER trilogy in the same universe. They can throw whatever at the wall and see what sticks.

What most fans like about star wars is the universe, you can write infinite stories that happen in it. Would love to see independent smuggler, bounty hunter etc films and that is probably what they are going to do with it.

Doesn't mean they can't get nominated for Best Picture - look at all the crap Pixar has had nominated.

Honestly they should ditch the category. It's clear that voters aren't gonna be picking anything but Disney or Pixar for the foreseeable future - regardless of quality. That was made blatantly apparent last year.

If you'd told someone in the heyday of Westerns that audiences would grow tired of them, you'd have been laughed out of the room.

>TFA will be the last exciting Star wars release because it's gonna be a yearly thing from now on
>>
>>64019325

Two words my friend: Skinner box.

Not only is Star Wars highly resistant to brand fatigue itself, the simple desire for a "better" Star Wars movie is enough to pull in massive profits every time. That's why The Force Awakens was such a cultural event, and is receiving near-universal praise despite the fact that it was insultingly mediocre. People want it to be the redeemer they've all been waiting for, and when the hype dies down they will see that, despite distancing itself from the infamous prequels, TFA really wasn't.

All it actually takes to keep peddling Star Wars until the end of time without people losing interest is to ration out quality. All it's going to take is one of the spin-off movies (such Rogue One, etc) to actually make people say "This feels exactly like Star Wars, thank you." After that, people will keep buying Star Wars tickets like scratch-offs, hoping THIS will be the one. Give them half a bone every five years, and you've got them for life. Do that shit long enough, and you don't even have to worry about quality: the new generation of fans is conditioned to your way of making movies.
>>
Is everything past Episode XI going to be spin-off shit like Rogue One, or are we getting another trilogy starting in 2021 after the Boba Fett spin-off movie comes out.
>>
>>64019325
Disney thinks their big franchises are immune because they drop little filler side stories into the mix on off years.
>>
>Plus, he and the rest of the Star Wars team have an advantage: time.

>But in the Star Wars universe, time moves. Han Solo, Princess Leia, Luke Skywalker, and the legacy actors playing them can grow from callow youth to wise old age and then pass the torch. Literally. Like, count on a lingering scene of one of those olds offering a lightsaber to one of the new kids in Force Awakens. The universe can extend for 10,000 years forward and back from the moment Luke blows up the first Death Star. “In the case of Rogue One, we’re essentially making a period piece,” Hart says. “The benefit of making additional episodes that move forward on the timeline is that we are making new space for ourselves.”

Two things spring to mind here. First, we get to see real actors age and become their characters in a way that no other cinematic venue can offer. There's a definite thrill in seeing the actual fucking Luke Fucking Skywalker being an old man, thirty years after a New Hope. This is the kind of advantage - artistic or otherwise - that having a mulit billion-dollar franchise allows you to have.

But then on the other hand, how the fuck is someone supposed to compete with that? What's the incentive to create the original low-budget contemporary star wars movie when you know you'll never be able to match that emotional resonance? In this world of mega huge cinematic franchises there's no real reason to go see a small film by a nobody because if it's good, there's a 99% chance that that's all there is. You're now stuck wanting more and you'll never have it because Star Wars type movies are extremely rare.

TL;dr: good for star wars fans, shitty for everyone else. What else is new?
>>
>>64019325
Brand fatigue does not exist. The people who work on it are fatigued or discredited by flops, but a brand is never exhausted as long as it is making money. There is a new Harry Potter universe film coming out, new Pirates of the Caribean stuff, and remember when people started saying they were tired of capeshit, look at what you have now. These things will never ever ever end. You'll be watching Spiderman and Star Wars movies in 30 years, I'd bet all my money on it.
