Pirates of the Caribbean is the same way. The first movie ends in a way that makes it a perfect platform for sequels, but also wrapped up the plot-line in case the movie was not successful.

The plot was stupid af and pondered to the lowest common denominator. If JJ had balls he would have tried some new ideas to continue the story. Instead we got a stupid Mary Sue lead that's a Jedi without any training and a rehash of ANH. Death Star 3.0? And flying through more fucking trenches? Give me a goddamn break.
The prequels sucked but at least they were original.
