The definition I know is that a Mary Sue is a character added into an already established world and is liked by all the famous characters of that world.
The origin of the term is from some ancient Star Trek fanfiction with an Ensign Mary Sue going on adventures with Kirk/Spock/Bones.
Rey isn't that different.
Mary Sues often have a noble flaw about that.

Up until Star Wars, I'm not sure what other film portrayed people as having fun, while shooting people and blowing them up. It's kind of what they do.

For all Poe knows, Finn could have been out murdering people all his life, and only now finally realize it's messed up. Poe has no idea.
Yet, he has no remorse about obliterating a couple dozen Stormtroopers, who maybe 2 days away from having the same realization Finn had.
Same goes for every other character in every movie.

it seems like a subtle nitpick but I'd argue it's actually a big deal.
addressing the fact that the faceless shock troops are human beings by making one of them change sides challenged the normal absence of moral relativism in this kind of film. they needed to do it more carefully than they did, and probably provide more context.
I also think they fucked up by having Finn kidnapped as a child because it's encouraging everyone to think of young Stormtroopers living in an Imperial Orphanage, going to the Sheev High School and then getting military training before being thrown into combat.
the basis of Star Wars is that everyone is adults and the combatants have decided to be in the situation they're in, so it's okay to be treated like Wehrmacht in a WW2 film. Finn's character could probably have admitted he joined the First Order without realizing they were so evil and it would have been acceptable and better character development.

The other thing that bothered me about TFA is that it trivializes war quite a bit even for a fantasy film. Characters often cheer, not only after shooting down enemy TIEs but also when they kill stormtroopers right in front of them. Also, when X-wings are shot down, we don't see what happens inside the cockpit, just an exterior explosion.
Compare that to A New Hope. I don't quite recall any character cheering after killing a stormtrooper right in front of them (correct me if wrong). Then during the Death Star battle, when X-wings were shot down we see characters we didn't even know (like porkins and maybe one other guy) screaming as their cockpit goes in flames.
I think there are two reasons for this.
1. George derived a lot of the battle scenes from old WWII films, sometimes shot by shot. I think a lot of those had similar reaction shots of a guy getting blown up inside the cockpit.
2. Back in the 70s America was fresh out of Vietnam, a drafted war, and WWII was only 30 years ago. Way more Americans back then were familiar with the realities of war and if it was trivialized the way TFA did it, they'd probably be offended.

Like there was no feeling of distance.
When Finn and Rey escape Jakku on the Falcon, they don't even go to lightspeed, and yet they're far enough from the Stardestroyer in orbit that they don't even mention it.
They're also far enough for Han to pick them up and also be found by pirates.
And when Deathstar 3 shoots, they see all its shots blow up planets, from the surface of the secret Rebel base.
Like they're in the same system.

He did get shot by the Bowcaster, which we've seen be a big fucking deal throughout the movie.
And he's having a crisis of faith since he was feeling unsure about himself before killing Han, and he thought that killing him would purify himself and strengthen him.

As an aside, I liked how Rey fought with the saber like it was a staff.

What remains is simply Rey going super sayan and saving the day with her amazing skills and connections to the force (which she didn't even know existed 2 days earlier) like the rest of the entire movie
finn and poe reunion at the resistance base should have been finn acting exactly like he did, like a little kid meeting hulk hogan, while poe acted relieved and surprise, because he is the only grown new main character, and finn clearly looks up to him so he acted older/wiser and cooler made sense, also for finn it was THE adventure but we could feel like poe had his share while still broing it out with finn, but like an older bro.
then when they are leaving to the starkiller base poe could say something like "you can do it" or something inspirational then at the shout "don't get cocky!" cuz cool memez. or even han could say it because finn gets to the falcon all high on his horse because he felt respect from dameron, his idol.
then we could have the exact opposite at the end, poe arriving happy to hug his friend after a succesful mission only to find rey lost in thought and get finn to the medics.
the end is tricky but the thing i'm trying to say is the relationship felt forced (except for the beginning, the escape is great) and, lile most in this movie, static, they went from A to C but without a journey. finn didn't became friends or equal with poe through the movie, he just was from one scene to the other, no real development.
