What?

Didn't Avatar started really small? If Star Wars drops from the largest first weekend to Avatar tier monday then it's a massive flop.

MOOOOOONSTEEEEEER
>>
>>63966326
Avatar is a movie with a modest opening due to a massive snow storm($70m) and absolutely incredible holds. TFA opened to 247 million and has fucking similar holds so far. It's going full younglings on Avatar and that's unstoppable

>>63966365
>possibly
It will murder it by at least 200 mill
>>
>>63966326
amazingly well, actually
it already has the best opening ever, despite not being shown yet in china, and its monday income is higher than the previous record holder spider man 2, and the dropoff is relatively small (same as avatar, which started much lower than sw- so that makes sw's drop off actually seem way more impressive)
>>
>>63966157
It's officially budgeted at £200m, to including advertising. Since film usually need to make 3x there budget to make money back, it's probably already turning a profit (and that's ignoring the absolute fuck tonne it will have made in merchandising/licensing).

And that's not even counting Christmas and New Years weekends. It may not go as long as Avatar, but it'll beat its record in shorter time.
>>
>>63966255
More. The SW budget was close to 250 and another 300 in advertising
>>
How can you call something that has made a half a billion dollars in one weekend a flop?

I haven't even seen it yet and am pretty lukewarm to Star Wars, but that's a lot of fucking money no matter how you cut it.
>>
>domestic
>relevant

Avatar's domestic run was never an impressive part of its record. Adjusted for inflation, Avatar barely makes the top 15 highest grossing domestic films of all time.

Star wars will have to do better than it's doing overseas if it even wants a chance of beating Titanic.
>>
>>63966079
No Avatar started huge and got huger:

1 $137,094,001 - 3,452 Dec 18-24- $39,714 $137,094,051 1
Dec 25–31 1 $146,530,209 +6.9% 3,456 +4 $42,399 $283,624,210 2

It then ran for 8 months before closing out its cinema run. TFA needs to see next weekend get /bigger/ to keep up the pace.

To be fair, with SW even my grandma's company would have destroyed any boxoffice.

Even if it was 2 hours of her cooking and titled: SW, The nana awakens

Not really, at least I don't think. Obviously less sales is bad but everyone who's interested in seeing it saw it the weekend it came out mostly.
>>
>>63966804
No, no, just reading numbers. As here:

>>
>>63966936
My apple is the first week. Your orange is the first weekend. The point remains the same:

Avatar did more in its second week than its first. SW will need to track that pattern to get anywhere near 2.7 billion. Simplified, everyone who saw it this week will need to see it again, and 12% of them will need to convince one extra person to see it, in order to track comps for Avatar.

If TFA shrinks 30-40% this weekend, it will never run for 8 months, and will finish just shy of $2 billion.
>>
JW > SW on Internation OW though

>>63967061
I think most people are going for SW beating Avatar's domestic run, and not WW gross.
>>
>>63967155
>JW > SW on Internation OW though
who cares
>>
>>63966987
The part of this emerging submeme which is true for this thread, is that nothing about the film's real quality, as measured by return views, has been determined yet.

If I were Bob Iger, I would probably have a secretary mention to one of TFA's ass prods that there is a rumor going around that JJ's job will be judged on how many people go to see it in weeks 2-12, not week 1, which was all baked in already.

When people start hearing, "It's a rehash; it's full of plot holes; it doesn't make sense until episode VIII; it ends right where it should get good," that's where actual film making decisions will be judged, and where comps to Avatar will start to actually matter.

For all the angst about the process, JJ had the easiest job of the trilogy here. All he had to do was make the date. The box office was baked in. His relative cowardice will result in a failure to boost via word of mouth, but a hit is a hit.

Rian Johnson now has the worst job in the world. If he turns the fans from puzzled to pissed, his next job will be shooting corporate training videos in Madagascar.
>>
>>63967155
>JW > SW on Internation OW though

That was without China though. However, Deathly Hallows Part 2 did a $314m opening weekend in 2011, which is much larger than TFA's 2015 (~$280m) even without adjusting for inflation ticket prices, IMAX, etc.
>>
>>63967341
Forgot to add that Deathly Hallows Part 2 also didn't open in China until weeks later, like TFA.
>>
>>63966509
>$1B in a single week
Holy Shit.
>>
>>63967385
Jurassic World has the record for fastest 1b right?
>>
>>63967428
13 days. TFA might cut that in half.
>>
>>63967468
Crazy that we'll likely have 3 record breakers for 1b in a year (Fast 7, Jurassic World and possibly Star Wars)
>>
>>63967428

Furious 7 or fast 8 or whatever it's called.
>>
>>63966079
it drops the same percentage retard. So if Star Wars made more in the first place, with the same percentage drop it's still makes more money
>>
>>63967533
Furious 7 took 17 days.
>>
I bet a load of people will watch it on Christmas eve.

And then on New Years.
Disney struck gold with the December release. I wonder if Ep8 will keep the June/July (I forget which) release or move to December.

I kinda hope it moves to December because GotG 2 releases very closely to it and I don't want SW to eat it.

>just under $250m domestic opening weekend
>only $280m overseas

So TFA continues the trend of star wars being extremely weak overseas compared to its domestic success. Seriously, when was the last time you heard a movie in the 2010s make only just over 50% of its opening weekend gross overseas?

I'm predicting this movie will make around $800m domestic and $1b worldwide for a total gross of $1.8b. Maybe it'll stretch to $1.9 or just under $2b, but anything over that is out of the question because of this weak overseas performance.

>>63967603
Christmas Eve is probably the worst day of the year for box office sales you dumb cunt.
>>
>>63967155
>JW > SW on Internation OW though

JW made $100 million of its international box office in China alone

Star Wars hasn't even been released in China yet
>>
>>63967511
If those fuckers keep making tickets more and expensive we'll se new records every year.
>>
Avatar dropped 1% in it's second weekend.

Good luck Star Wars.
>>
>>63967765
It's also wrong, TFA made more in the actual international OW(which was up from estimates) than JW, without China, cause this movie is a phenomena

We will also have the highest number of movies that made more than 1 billion in one year

1. Avengers: Age of Oltron
2. Furious 7
3. Jurassic World
4. Minions (lel)
5. Star Wars TFA
>>
>>63967779

Not just more expensive, but Star Wars stretched it's opening "weekend" all the way back to midday Thursday.

If they announced ticket sales it would be more impressive.
>>
>>63967815
You're talking shit. Star wars made about $280m overseas. Jurassic world made $316m with China, and Deathly Hallows Part 2 made $314m without China in 2011.

And people said that December was bad for movie releases, yet here we are with SW doing summer tier number (and higher than those even)
>>
>>63967815
>It's also wrong, TFA made more in the actual international OW(which was up from estimates) than JW

Nope.
Jurassic World: $316 million international OW
Star Wars The Force Awakens: $281 million international OW
>>
>>63967815

International OW and Worldwide OW are not the same

Star Wars has the higher Worldwide OW but Jurassic World still got the higher International OW
>>
>>63967061

This pretty much.

Crap like Avatar and Titanic were cultural phenomenons that increased in business from week to week, or barely dropped.

Star Wars hasn't had that clout since A New Hope.

Like Disney gives a shit. They probably madr enough money to buy half of Europe from Kylo Ren toy mask sales alone.

Agreed on those numbers, anon. It will be shitposting galore when TFA beats Avatars domestic record but fails to beat Titanic worldwide. But who cares about Americans anyway.
>>
>>63968021

i'm more surprised at Furious 7 making $1.5 billion, it can't be all because of Paul Walker's death

Minions has the normie hype
>>
>>63968142
>it can't be all because of Paul Walker's death
Even if F&F is a decently popular franchise, his death was what gave it the huge boost.
>>
>>63968142
Fast and Furios is an awesome movie experience to have fun with some friends.

It's more of a ritual for me and my friends to go and watch it than anything else.

Walker's death helped, word of mouth made it really big.
>>

I didn't even know what Minions was until this thread.

Kids films must be a goldmine. It only cost 75 mil.

No major bankable blockbuster movies from a well-established franchise has EVER been released in December. TFA is setting the standard, not breaking it.

>>63967860

>and they still tell us the cinema industry is declining every year

I've always found it really weird that Summer is considered movie season and not Winter, i mean in the summer there are plenty of other things you could do than going to the cinema while in Winter with shitty weather it's best to sit in a warm and comfy theater. Maybe it's because i'm not American.

It's just that the box office revenue is more and more concentrated into a handful of huge blockbuster movies than spread out over many different movies.
