The reason why is clear. Each character is well defined and adds something. You actually care about them and the dialogue. There's not much more to it.

Certainly better than the prequels. Not as good as any of the OT films, and I certainly enjoyed it more than TFA.
It was too much like watching the best parts of other movies mashed up together for my taste, but it wasn't a 'bad' movie.
It was very generic, but fun.
Good (even great, I dare say) movie for preteens. That's not a bad thing, but its definitely not an adult movie (but it can be enjoyed by them).

This movie recaptured the feeling of fun and adventure of the original Star Wars films, but without any of their baggage. It's a huge shame this is tied to the MCU soap opera, and I hope that any sequels it has downplay that connection in favor of good old fashioned space adventure.
