That's a good way to describe it. Kylo was threatening in a different way than Vader and the other Sith. While Vader and his fellows were mostly calm, quiet and manipulative, Kylo is brash, angry and insecure about living up to the legacy his forefathers (especially Vader) set for him.
He's a kid trying to stand up with the adults. His angry outbursts are him failing to do so and realizing his own insecurities and faults. During the final fight against Finn and Rey he was a desperate, wounded but still dangerous beast that had a lot to prove. He failed, but I think in the next movie Kylo will show up with a vengeance.
While VII was pretty much a shameless remake of the original movie I am eager to see how the next one goes.

i did like when he punched himself, it made sense lorewise and was pretty cool how he did it rather nonchalantly instead of making it a big deal. however his edgelord shit was too much and made him look like a weak villain. there was a reason vader was a cultural icon and no it wasnt because how he looked. kylo isnt the same,i get hes a vader fanboy but at the same time hes way too "crawling in my skin" to be a good villain. when your villain shows so much weakness the audience writes them off. ren better get fucking scary in the next one or else hes a literal saturday morning cartoon villain

I think that Anakin was the CRAWLING IN MY SKIN. and Ren actually fits the role a dodgy brat evil wannabe badass. It works so much better in this one. I loved the movie, but I agree, without Driver's performance the movie would have been considerably worse.
Kylo Ren is surprisingly well written, especially for a Star Wars character. And Driver delivered the whole "edgy wannabe" aspect very well, as well as showing subtle signs of conflict. Much better than Anakin (although considering the quality of the dialogue in the prequels, I'd assume it wasn't all the actors fault)
