He led a boring life and had Obi Wan to look up to, hell he called him uncle ben. His entire family was brutally murdered as well as Obi Wan. It's not necessarily negative qualities but Obi Wan in particular gave him something to look up to rather than just becoming some mercenary pilot (or even joining the imperial fleet like he was thinking of doing). All this makes him a realistic character and gave him the basis on which he comes to terms with the force and good and evil in the course of the next two movies.
