I'm a huge Star Wars fan, and TFA was a lot of fun, but this show is already better after 4 episodes.

Can't fucking wait for more. Dat. Rocinante.

Episode 1 is the worst of the 4. Give it the proper chance.

It's good to be skeptical, but SyFy has finally realized their mistake. They've spent a shit ton on this show and jokingly refer to it as "The Expense".

Also... the writers of the books are involved... and they are good.

I also thought the first episode felt a little off but that was quickly remedied. Can't wait for more.

Slight change from the book there. Some other guy got pinned to the wall and a more permanent state of dead. I suppose having it happen to Havelock reduces the size of the cast to more manageable proportions for TV and adds a bit to the Earthworm's story.

If anyone's wondering why there's gravity on Ceres, it's because they 'spun it up' to about .3g on the surface. Rich people live near the surface, poor belter scabs live in tunnels closer to the center where the gravity is much less.

Millar has had scenes drinking water in different areas and they've shown how differently the water pours out in both.

>>63857050
Yeah, the OPA are the political arm of the Belter populace. Their leader is the foreman who's building the Mormon's big generational ship - the ship whose sensors he was using to track the Donnager-raider fight.

The people who attacked the MCRN Donnager are from an as-yet unrevealed group. They caught the Donnager by surprise with the fancy ECM missiles that could evade the Martian point defence AI and the railguns mounted on ships that had previously been thought too small to carry them. Then you got to see their fancy self sealing suits when they boarded the Donnager later on.
>>
>>63857148

Starts out ok but it turns into religious bullshit real quick. If you're in it for the sci-fi you'll be disappointed.

So I'm trying to understand who / why the ships attacked the Donnager.

I'm assuming the guy played by Chad Coleman (the black guy who was talking to the Mormon guy) is the one behind it. Obviously his organization, the OPA has some interest in causing a war between Earth and Mars because he would benefit in the long run or something?
>>
>>63858965

Based on what I saw of the books, I'd say it is more complex than your instincts or the show have shown us so far, so don't go too far down that yellow brick road quite yet.

I made the mistake of skimming the books to figure it out because insatiable curiosity is a bad thing.
>>
>>63858965

He ushered the Mormon's off their own ship so he could discreetly point its sensors at the Donnager. So he knew the fight was happening but I have my doubts he's behind it. Just well connected.
>>
>>63858965
Er,no. He wanted the ship's sensors pointed at the Donnager precisely because he doesn't know what's going on. Just like Earth he's trying to gather intelligence on the attack, he just has to do it in a more ad-hoc way.

Earth, Belters, Mars

and you have corporations that intermingle with all of them
>>
>>63859630
Earth is insanely overcrowded and needs vital raw material, especially water, harvested from the asteroid belts and the rings of Saturn. It's ruled by the U.N. They have inferior tech and equipment but make up for it through the sheer size of their population and economy.

Mars is still only partially terraformed and humans can't survive on its surface yet. To keep their artificial habitats livable they require vital supplies, especially water, from asteroid belts and the rings of Saturn. Martians are industrious, collectivist, and militaristic, and they consider Earthlings a bunch of whiny welfare queens. They have much better tech and higher quality ships than Earth but much less manpower and fewer resources. They have to do more with less in order to compete.

The workers who harvest all this stuff live in miserable conditions because technology is still too primitive to comfortably support human life in space and all the stuff they harvest gets sent straight to the two planets instead of helping the workers, so they're really resentful and desperate and lots of them become terrorists.

Mars and Earth both desperately need the supplies harvested in the belt and there isn't enough to go around, so they are in a state of cold war as each fears the other will try to seize vital resource harvesting stations like Ceres by force. Some mysterious faction is now trying to spark the war by antagonizing both sides and framing the other.

I don't understand this shit.

Why does Earth even need water? 79% of the fucking planet is covered in water, even moreso with sea level rise depicted in the show.

Desalination exists now, and is getting cheaper to do. So why does Earth even have a water problem in this universe?

>>

>>63860242
Earth doesn't need water, just the minerals and radioactives. It's Mars which wants all the water to turn their world green.

Belters just want water, air and a decent share in the profits rolling off their stations. Most of them can't live anywhere but the low gravity asteroids and moons now.
>>
>>63860340
>Most of them can't live anywhere but the low gravity asteroids and moons now.

That's not really portrayed too well in the show since everyone seems to be in 1g and look like regular humans. It's understandable that they can't get freakishly tall and thin actors, though.
>>
>>63859630
there is earth. thats earth obviously also includes the moon which is pretty much a airport, the main rep is the indian lady. the characters holden and amos are earthers as well.
there is mars. im not sure they really have a character that represents them. the ship the donnager is mars its ship it gets rekt. alex is from mars.

then there is OPA which stands for Outer planet alliance. im not sure if they really explained what this entails in the show but its basically all the astroids and stations floating around. not controlled by earth. this is where things get a little confusing because some stations have better ties with earth and mars and are nicer to earther and martians while others right out think earth and mars oppress them. the dudes with the tats and tall guys are basically the outlier faction of this group. fred johnson(the black guy from walking dead sorry dont know the actors name) is the governer? of a large station that builds ships, currently building the mormon ship. he kind of tries to play it neutral for buisness purposes and is sort of the defacto head of the government of the OPA. i believe millar is OPA but he doesnt really care about politics.

I think this is mostly correct, been awhile since ive read the first book and just finished the last one so some of this might not have been stated in the show yet but i dont think its to spoilery. sorry about my spelling/grammer im kinda drunk
>>
>>63860437
They have made an effort by occasionally showing freakishly tall misproportioned people, e.g. that guy who gets tortured by the Indian lady who forces him to stand up in 1g and he can't take it. They can't show it all the time because of obvious limitations, but they made the existence and importance of the problem clear
>>
>>63860551

Yea, I'm satisfied with their approach. It's better than hiring shit actors solely bc of their appearance.
>>
>>63860437
yeah its one thing, i think the show is lacking. most of the extreme belters are pretty much a different species(like the tall guy getting tortured) from living in low gravity all the time. in the books they have a very different culture from earth and mars, they even have there own sort of langauge which is kind of spanishy. also sort of related most martians are of eastern decent but have a texas sounding accent for some reason.

Being curious, I just read some of the plot synopsis of the novels on wikipedia and now I understand why the series is called the Expanse specifically...

Wish I honestly didn't read it now because it kinda ruins any mystery the show had to me.
>>
>>63860642
It was kind of strange that there weren't more indians/asians on the crew. Also, none of them seemed to have texan accents.
>>
>>63859872
>>63859961
If you look closely the bullets come out of each barrel. More like 10 rifles welded together shooting off one by one. Maybe fewer moving parts = less chance of failure? Or it could just be a lazy animator like you think.
>>
>>63858358
First episode was forgettable.
Second demonstrated some of the worst possible tension building available in TV writing.
Third episode was good because of Mormon.
Fourth episode's space based shit was pretty much a repeat of everything that suffered in the second episode but with more characters to throw away.

Series needs to pare itself down to just space buddy cop comedy and Mormons, because the writers can't properly utilize anything else they've got on their hands.
>>
>>63861059
All the novels? There's another coming out next year, so at least you didn't spoil that.

Well, nothing is really that spoiled honestly, just very basic details of the plot. None of the wikipedia articles on any of the books go into a lot of detail, I'm guessing because the series isn't that popular, and it's very recent too.

But I did get spoiled that It's called the Expanse because the events happening are due to an alien thing that builds an interstellar gate allowing humans to travel to other star systems, leading to a massive "expanse" of humanity across the stars
>>
>>63861059

Yup. Yes you did. The noir is the best part about the show/book.
>>
>>63861105
The thing about gatlings is they need to rotate to fire. I guess it could be a weird pepperbox design that has separate firing mechanisms for each barrel, or maybe a rotating chamber.

I'd put my money on the animators not knowing what they were doing, though.

>>63860242

>>
>>63861200
Also if you think about it, having stationary barrels kind of make sense. In a gatling gun if the firing mechanism goes out or is damaged then it won't work. Same thing for the mechanism that spins it. With fixed barrels with their own firing mechanisms you have some redundancy. You miss out on the small bit of cooling spinning gives but who needs cooling in the icily cold depths of space?
>>
>>63861272
But she didn't have a noticeable drawl, and neither did the marine that was escorting Holden. Seems like only the pilot had it.

>>
>>63861330
Space is a vacuum. Vacuum is a very good insulator. Cooling would be, and is, a very large issue in space, you can see this with how large the radiators on the ISS are.
>>
They've already shown the first gay couple on the show. How many more episodes before they pop some transgender folks in there? I wonder how they would portray that. I mean in 200 years you'd think they'd be able to do better than a Caitlyn Jenner cosmetically at least.
>>
>>63861350
yeah, they really need to fix that. capturing the true essence of Martian society in this universe isn't possible without faithfully recreating their Asian Space Texan sound and aesthetic
>>
>>63861390
The cooling is for the inside. I'm fairly sure those guns were all outside the ship. I'm fairly sure outside is pretty fucking cold.

>someone is actually willing to defend hack writers who recycle tension building events
>someone is actually willing to defend hack writers who should have punctured the main cabin in the second episode so they had to do a seabung maneuver, since it's the only believable situation, and fucking come up with something else for the fourth episode.

Actually forgot that last point.
>hard sci-fi brittle shitty space crafts
>have CIWS to spam high velocity shit all over the place
>pretending there'd be prolonged engagements
Writers nowhere near prepared for the universe they've been given.
>>
>>63861501
When you heat something up in a vacuum, no matter how cold the outside temperature is, it is much harder to cool it down.

In an atmosphere, the air will cool things down for you with enough time, but in a vacuum, if you create a lot of heat (and since the guns are metal which conducts heat really well) they will take a very long time to cool down back to the temperature of the vacuum. Think about it this way, in a vacuum there are no molecules bounding around and interacting with the metal that has been heated up, so there's no way for the heat to be transferred away form the metal quickly.

There was plenty of shit flawed about the storytelling.

Attitudes like yours is why Lost got however the fuck many seasons it has, why there's so much capeshit in the theaters, why JJ Abrams has his hands in every fucking pot, why Tarantino is still being greenlit for his edgy bullshit, why Avatar is being given more entries.

Radiation works in a vacuum.
http://helios.gsfc.nasa.gov/qa_sp_ht.html

So being closer to Ceres than to earth there's less energy/heat reaching them from the sun. So cold cold cold.
>>
>>63862012
The thing is, in a vacuum radiation is the only way to cool an object down. Which takes a real long time unless you have radiators, hell even with radiators it takes a while.

So no, space won't cool it down.

http://www.centauri-dreams.org/?p=34617

I found the temperatures Dawn recorded at Ceres a bit startling. The 180 K (-93 °C) on the low side seems about right, but I hadn’t expected equatorial temperatures to reach as high as 240 K (-33 °C), which is a temperature I can recall experiencing several times in Iowa during an unusually tough winter. This JPL news release notes that temperatures at and near Ceres’ equator are too high to support surface ice for long periods, as explained in new work published in Nature to which we now turn.

Some of the attention to detail actually blew me away.
When the self destruct on the Donnager is being activated and the fingerprint sensor is pressed, you can actually see it recognising the features of the fingerprints even though it's absolutely tiny on screen.

Or whenever shit goes down Amos looks at other people's faces to see how he should be reacting because he's a complete autist/pscyhopath
