Talk about speculation. Everything we saw showed she hated it and hated the way the other nuns viewed both sexuality and female reproductive health. She was practically 'born' into the habit, she was a foundling and lived in the convent, there was no choice involved. It was taken from her.
In essence she was a victim of cult brainwashing and Cleary did what he did to deprogram her and give her a chance at happy fulfilling life with him. He never made her do those abortions to begin with, that was her choice and she knew the risks, whether her turned her in or someone else it was just a matter of time. What's important is he was there for her from that moment on and helped her build a life of her own not what was imposed on her by the church.

I've cooled down on how mad I was at Cleary for setting Harriet up, but as I was going back over the first season this scene kind of triggered me again. I had forgotten how menacing he was too when he was giving hints that he knew what she was really up to.
I guess I can accept that the real love for Harriet blossomed after they began working closely together though, and that it just started as a way to make some more money for Cleary.
