This movie was meh

No real character development and a pretty generic plot. Needed an actual bad guy as well
>>
>>63836568
Why would something like this need character development?
>pretty generic plot
Another word for simple, nothing wrong with a simple plot, it's usually said it's best to keep things simple.

I thought it was great.
>>
>>63836694
If you don't have an engaging plot to focus on, you need interesting characters to make up for it.

All we have is a main character that likes to smoke, a generic vague CIA type and a brooding revenge type.

That's just me, it kinda fell flat.

It was overrated as fuck, 6.5/10 at best.

Liked the movie overall, thought Del Toro suddenly turning it into an over the top revenge flic i complete with action movie bad guy confrontation in the span of 10 minutes was a tonal misstep, then it switched back over immediately after which made that part feel even more out of place.

Overall really fucking great

>French-Canadian director Denis Villeneuve’s personal moral fascination is what makes his movies’ political topics so greatly compelling. He brings moral seriousness, not topical attitudes, to Sicario’s war on drugs. The title, an arcane hitman-assassin reference, purposely alludes to a group of Jewish Zealots in the a.d. 70 Jewish–Roman war in the Holy Land, in order to broaden — and complicate — an issue that otherwise would be subject to political controversy.

>As in his powerful 2010 film Incendies (about the effect of the war in Lebanon on later generations in North America), Villeneuve closely examines the motivations of his three main characters: local DEA agent Kate Macer (Emily Blunt), federal agent Matt (Josh Brolin), and covert agent Alejandro (Benicio Del Toro). Looking beyond their legal jurisdiction, Villeneuve depicts them as players in a grave human tragedy.

>Villeneuve sees — almost smells — the bloodiness of their efforts. No filmmaker since Sam Peckinpah has handled violence so effectively. “Be alert. Be vigilant. Be aware,” an FBI commander tells his troops. And that’s how Villeneuve directs. His Southwestern landscapes are presented existentially: plane shadows over flesh-like terrain; the Big Earth seen from above, catching microscopic human movements. One extraordinary vista features a sign (Las Biblias es verdad) on a mountainside. It gives an almost numinous perspective on the characters’ vexing, mundane maneuvers. And on the ground, in tunnels, or in hide-outs, the action involves all one’s senses. Sicario is technically superb, with vibrant sound effects and imagery ranging from sun-bright clarity to spectral night-vision by cinematographer Roger Deakins.

>Sicario always returns to human scale — to Kate, Matt, and spooky Alejandro’s political conflicts, which are also moral conflicts, as the film shows how their noblest intentions get thwarted by unforeseen realities. (Brolin’s jug-jawed certainty works on an immediate level, Del Toro’s quiet passion is deeply stirring, but British actress Blunt, alas, isn’t convincing at conveying American temperament.) Sicario recalls the profundity of John Ford’s most sagacious western, Two Rode Together (1961), where moral ambiguities met political exigencies — a complex vision lost in our current, self-absolving, bifurcated culture.

>Most of our movies today trade complexity for partisanship and sensationalism, whether for liberal or conservative ends. But Villeneuve brings back hard thinking and emotional response — a conservative value, and a nearly lost art.

He didn't need her to sign that shit, it's not really his problem, unless you didn't catch that he's a fucking columbian drug lord that was only working with them for revenge.

I felt he didn't want her ending up getting offed just because she felt she was upholding some moral high ground or some shit by not signing that off, so felt the need to force her since she reminds him of his daughter.

i was surprised because the movie was pretty realistic up to that part, they could at least show the guy had some kind of ground support.
>>
>>63838972

Because he was specifically contracted by the U.S. government to help them and the most powerful crime syndicate in the world restore a degree of order to international trafficking. Alejandro used this as a golden excuse to kill two birds with one stone: an important official in the Mexican cartel who also happened to be the guy that ordered the murder of Alejandro's family. This is made clear during their dinner conversation, when the cartel lord recognizes him as the attorney and says the murder of his family wasn't personal, to which Alejandro replied, "For me, it is."

Therefore, most of the U.S. bodies knew exactly who they hired and who they hired him from. As far as the police officer goes, it's just a natural hunch that the Hispanic dude stopping their processes is likely their most fearsome competitor who would prefer maintaining a monopoly over certain aspects of the black market.

I have a question that I couldn't really answer for myself since I first saw it months ago.

The raid into Juarez and back.

Wouldn't you plan the trip back so that you drive in the opposite lane on the way into the US?

I mean, we saw, and you can check on google maps, the lane going INTO Mexico is largely empty, it's just the one going into US that's clogged.

Why wouldn't you want border patrol to clean a lane for the CIA to take back into the country in the opposite lane, and remove the risk of getting stuck in traffic?

It seems like a no brainer to me. Why not do it that way?

Anyone got ideas? I couldn't figure it out.

I don't think it was that clear, and it's unfair to call anyone who didn't see that to be a pleb. I initially thought he was part of some Columbian drug gang that the US was helping to get one big, but more controllable group below the border instead of the mayhem of lots of smaller ones. A few lines of dialogue were hard to understand (for me) and the arguments between posters didn't help to find a clear explanation

It's dumb to say that he really was a prosecutor because he's a total fucking operator and is shown to be twice as good as everyone else, how can some lawyer be better than everyone else and be a one man angel of death for the final 20 minutes?

I fucking HATE pirate threads. They are very easily identifiable too. Some months after a movie has its theater run, all of the sudden new threads pop up about it out of nowhere. And within the threads are the same discussions that the release date threads for the film debated about over and over. But clearly people like OP didnt read those big threads where their generic thoughts were already combed over ad nauseum because he didn't bother to pay to see the movie. So now, having seen the movie finally illegally, OP makes his thread and expects people to just talk about it again. He honestly believes his thoughts are unique and threadworthy when in 100% of pirate scum threads they never fucking are. He feels ENTITLED to discussion just because he finally got off his ass to perform the least effort possible to see the movie at literally no cost to himself and he casually makes his thread, usually while still watching the movie too. Well I say fuck this and fuck you OP. You do not have the right to fucking discuss this movie or any other movie you fucking leech. If I was a mod I would fucking perma you and any other pirate fucking scum.

In what way did he go "Jason Bourne"? Is he a highly skilled covert ops gone rogue? Does he have the most powerful government on his heels? Does he suffer from amnesia?

Why isn't his combat prowess believable? Can you think of some examples?

Instead of making vague, inept comparisons, try actually thinking before you further drown this board in shitwater.

that's a gay criticism, the main character not developing was partially the point of the movie

she was trying to hold on to idealism and following protocol and the legal system, but struggles with it when she realizes that the cartel can't be dealt with that way because mass violence and drug trade has reached a state of normalcy in mexico

the movie demonstrates that it's such an everyday occurrence that regular people with families get involved, and the incorruptible are usually the most vulnerable
