I think it's supposed to mirror Luke and his father for Kylo and the Luke and Obi Wan death for Rey plus clear the way for the new cast in the following movies. I'm willing to bet you see Luke more in the sequel but if not a death then something that keeps him from being the center of attention. There is already a ton of what was Luke doing where was he etc. But this new group is the stories focus and they made a mistake not killing them off or retiring them somewhere in the 30 years between now and the battle of Endor but felt as if they needed them to pull in fans.
