Were the Republic and the Resistance separate same entities? Because what the First Order said they did with the starkiller comes off as a pretty massive declaration of war.
>>
>>63826485
Yeah. The Republic and Empire have a truce, but the Republic is secretly funding and helping the Resistance, a group that's resisting what remains of the Empire.
>>
>>63826485

The Republic is the new government established after the Battle of Endor.

The Resistance is basically the Republic's military tasked with destroying the remnants of the Empire (the First Order).

It's ironic that while the prequels had way too much politics and trade negotiations and shit, TFA could have used some more political exposition to make this whole situation clearer.
>>
I wish we knew anything at all about the new Republic. Who cares if they get starkilled if we've never seen them?
>>
>>63826953

The Republic wasn't destroyed, the capital of the Republic is on Chandrila.

The planet that you saw getting rekt by Starkiller was Hosnian Prime.
>>
>>63827005
But weren't they part of the republic? Why blow it up if they're not?

He's right, though. Blowing up the senate planet meant very little. Similarly, we have no idea of the scale of the first order. Near as you can tell from on screen, they've got a Star Destroyer, a planet based Death Star thingy, and a bunch of tie fighters and some troop ships. How big either faction is is really vague, aside from the resistance that is basically the old rebel alliance sized manned by people who couldn't figure out what to do once they sort-of won.

All the higher-ups in the military command were killed, making it easy for most of the troops to just say "fuck it" and hang up their blasters instead of fighting a leaderless battle.

No, the ones who weren't around were the ones that stuck around for the First Order. The few higher-ups were totally at the Death Star, though. It was even being visited by Sheev, so most likely there was a whole bunch of ass-kissing civvy politicians on it as well. So what you've got left are the Star Destroyer captains and a couple of Commadores or whatever who kept things together for the First Order.

Mostly it's probably just the effect of everyone being free from Sheev's mindfuckery, and people following along.

Cost-effectiveness most probably.

Take an ordinary child and brainwash them and you've got a soldier that lives a normal lifespan and doesn't cost more than any other solider.

Clone a bunch of soldiers and you've got all the same brainwashing and feeding costs, except with the added cloning cost, and if you're going the clone-trooper way then you've also got them dying prematurely due to accelerated aging.

Never doubt a military command's ability to dump a good idea out of cost-effectiveness.

They've got advanced cloning and accelerated aging technology in this universe. Compared to that it's simple to give kids growth hormones until they all reach the same height. Then if you still ended up with a clone trooper too short you just dump them. They obviously didn't mind tall ones, what with Phasma.

I don't understand why a military group paid and outfitted by the new republic would call itself Resistance. They are part of a new established government group but paint themselves as an underdog group. The Resistance and the First order are both splinter groups from the different sides that are basically fighting a proxy war. Its like USSR and USA in the cold war.

Here's what i got out of it:

The Republic is the new galactic government body, which I gathered was supposed to be more benevolent and neutral than the Empire, much like the old Senate. But they're secretly supporting the Resistance because the First Order, which appears to be some kind of Empire-themed paramilitary boyscout organization for adults, is getting too powerful, aggressive, and clearly intends to overthrow them.
>>
>>63830638
Who had the authority to sign a peace treaty after the Emperor was dead?
>>
>>63830864
Why wouldn't they publicly condemn the First Order and send their fleet after them? They're the enemy. There's no reason to secretly support anything.
>>
>>63830638
But that's the thing. We have no clue without checking wookiepedia. We at least need to know the backdrop to understand the motivations of the factions and the plot better

A simple news headline or villager talk while Rey was on the line in the junkshop could at least give us an idea
>>
>>63831070
>We have no clue without checking wookiepedia
I'll be honest, I'm completely ignoring all my knowledge of the EU, and just assuming a logical conclusion to the events over Endor, and the intervening years.

I agree though, i wouldn't have minded a little bit more time spent establishing the setting BUT ANH starts pretty cold as well and all you ever learn about galactic politics is that the Emperor has dissolved the senate and the Moffs will govern their regions directly.
>>
>>63830934
A council of Moffs?
Or the empire fragments into smaller states and the First Order is one of the remnants.
>>
>>63827360
I'm glad they made it clear in the movie.
>>
>>63831213
I am also ignoring my EU knowledge because I am now confused what is canon and not. But the difference in ANH is that the emperor dissolving the senate and only the rebel alliance intact is that it leaves us with two opposing forces. Easy enough to understand.

Having 3 factions where one is supported by the "legitimate" government that somehow has not openly opposed/allowed splinters of its old enemy move about freely and a faction being called the "resistance" when it has support of the "legitimate" government is ???????

State supported insurgency like pic related.

I also remember Domhnall Gleeson having a few lines of exposition about the resistance. Something about the Republic allowing them to operate inside their controlled space, and finally being allowed to take the war to them.

I agree that a tiny bit more exposition wouldn't have hurt, but that wasn't the problem I had with the movie.

But if the NR was in cahoots with the horribly named "resistance." How come they didn't see this coming? Like...at all. You can explain Alderaan's demise because the rebellion was hella weak at the time. But the NR was in power and calling the shots. Aftermath says Mon Mothma wanted to disarm and even if you assume that they did, how come they had no clue the attack was coming or that the first order posed a serious threat? They did. That's literally the reason why the resistance exists. The republic wanted to maintain their benevolent peaceful facade while Leia and people loyal to her began operating extra-legally to actually take on the obvious threat.

Starkiller base was hidden.
>>
>>63831809
It kind of makes sense and it doesn't. The NR and the FO are two different "governing bodies" yes, but they seek to control the same "territory", whereas Afghanistan isn't attempting to rule both itself and USA

They say in the movie that their fleet is scattered all over and they can't get them together in time to mount an attack. That's why they send the squadrons of x-wins. It's all they had.

The part that bothers me more is that the mission profile seems like it would have been far better suited to B-wings or at least a squadron of Y-Wings.
>>
>>63832358
>The republic wanted to maintain their benevolent peaceful facade

So they basically didn't ramp up the resistance despite being run by a bunch of former rebel leaders (who should be on their toes for this sorta stuff), and let themselves get blown to bits so JJ Abrams can sell us a re-packed OT?

I feel like The Republic decided that The First Order were contained, no longer a real threat and saw no reason to go in there to continue a bloody war.

I think The First Order's plan was probably to blow up a few star systems, maybe it was in neutral or Republic territory? Which would lure the Republic into a full on war once again where they would use the Starkiller to decimate their fleet.

Seems kinda a dumb idea idk.

That's why its run by former rebel leaders. They know how to fight an uphill battle with limited resources. Also, royalty from a planet that got destroyed BECAUSE of their pacifistic nature is the one we see in charge.

Not to mention they had two massive intergalactic civil wars in 20 years, the population was probably just tired of that shit. Like the post WWII powers. Instead of open war they switched to economic, cold, and proxy wars.

I can't be the only one that think every movie that has happened since the original trilogy is severely lacking in aerial/space combat segments am I? The best parts of the original trilogy was watching Luke and Han/Lando fly into battle. I was severely disappointed the scenes with Xwings were limited to short few second bursts.

As I mentioned before. In Aftermath there is much talk of disarming. I'm left to believe the NR disarmed and they funded the "resistance" to secretly carry out their agenda.

>disarming when your opponent still has armaments
Fucking stupid

This was the biggest disappointment for me personally with the prequels.

The battle over endor was always my favorite part of the trilogy as a kid, and I played the shit out of all the X-Wing and TIE fighter games.

The phantom menace just has babby anakin flying PAST the space battle and then parking in a hangar for 15 minutes.

Clone wars has the chase with Jango Fett and Obi Wan, and its not awful, but its no fucking space battle.

The Revenge of the Sith just shits the bed by showing a visually interesting battle of capitol ships and fighters beating the shit out of each other over corusant. But instead of having some gun with it, and making a really fun action setpiece Anakin and Obi Wan just fly past it to have some wacky hijinks with fucking buzz droids before miserable scene after miserable scene on Grevious's ship.

Fuck I hate the prequels.

TOR is under the Legends line which is the old EU that was always non-canon. Everything NOT in that line is canon.

I'm not saying it makes sense. Its just the best explanation I can come up with.

Revenge of the Sith first sequence since ROTJ that gave us a large scale space war. I like dogfights, too but capital ship fights just hypes me more

Right. But instead of exploring that, and having them dodge point blank turbo laser blasts as they chase down a ship, boarding parties between big ships, and ships falling out of orbit and wrecking the city below; instead of all that our protagonist ignore it after one establishing shot to go fuck around with droids and Sheev makes cringe worthy reactions to dooku and the jedi having a shitty CGI sword fight.

Only five or six, actually. She was ~16 in the first movie, Anakin was ~10.

I think Portman was around 16 or 17 but Padme was closer to 13 or 14.

I...I...I don't even know anymore man. I saw the movie a little over 12 hours ago and I've barley slept. Killing Han after all the other shit was just such a slap to the face. The prequels were riddled with faults yes but...man I can't believe Disney fucking did that.

There was a fair explanation in that very same thread: >>63827664

It's really starting to bother me that people keep on making the comparison.

There needs to be a simple graphic to explain it
preferably with screencaps so I guess we're waiting until the bluray
