Going into the film, I knew this was how it was going to be. Abrams would play it safe as fuck and everyone would love it like they did Star Trek 2009. That's exactly what happened.
Apart fromSolo's death scene, there's nothing memorable about the film. No new ships, no cool-looking villains, no new architecture or settings, nothin'. It's by the books, mass-produced capeshit that they can pump out every year and a half (half the time Lucas spent on each Star Wars film).

What really bothers me specifically is that it seems like a continuation of the old conflict. Despite all the backstory about he new republic they are clearly not relevant enough to take on the First Order, so you wind up with the exact situation as the OT. In TFA and the OT you have your poor little rebels who stand up to the unstoppable evil empire against all odds. Compare that to the main conflict of the prequels, where the good guys are backed up by badass shit like the Jedi Order and the Grand Army of the Republic and they have star destroyers and walkers and fly around the galaxy fucking shit up. The conflict in the PT had more of a clash of superpowers feel than the underdog taking on the big guy. TFA just kept that OT conflict going and I was really hoping for something new. Like, why couldn't they have just done something like the Republic and the First Order fighting each other in a full scale war until they reach a bloody stalemate? The story could pick up in a galaxy ravaged by the war that seems to never end.Tbh I think that the clone wars themselves are way cooler and more interesting than the war against the empire

What would have been great for the PT is if Darth Maul was the main baddie they were chasing, and was Dooku's apprentice. The Jedi find out Dooku is his master thinking that he is the top Sith but then twist ending Sheev was running the show and rused them all. Basically Sithception that shit and make it a level deeper.

They literally could have had the Clone Wars pick up again right after the Empire was defeated. I'm sure any of the systems that wanted to break away from the Republic couldn't have been ready and willing to join a New Republic after being shit on by the Empire for 25 years.
But nope, that wouldn't have been safe enough for J.J. People are simpletons and need to be anchored tight to the plot lest they get confused or, god forbid, they take more than zero risks and end up with a less-than-stellar movie

I would have preferred it if the First Order was a terrorist group like the Rebellion in the OT. They don't have the power to blow up planets, no, but they're growing stronger and are making it their goal to cripple the recovering Republic as much as they can whilst hunting down Luke Skywalker.
Though, now that I think about it a bit more, this is sorta how they are in the film just without explanation that that is how they are. I believe it's explained in supplementary material that Leia believes them to be a threat, but the Republic doesn't take them seriously. It all seems kinda silly in that sense then as they have data on their Death Star -- they know they've got some real dastardly shit going on.
That new Death Star really ruins everything. I can't think of a single reason why it's still there and why the Republic/Resistance allows it to blow up five planets. Absolutely inexcusable.
