No, the saber fights were based on duels from Samurai movies.
The Saber duels in the original movies looked like a real katana duel between Samurai. The new saber fights look like fake kung fu prancing around like acrobats crap.
There was a brutal realism to OT fights that just doesn't exist in any other Star Wars film (or SW media to be honest) It's why the Darth Vader vs Obi Wan fight in Hope is my favourite.

Unpractical for the most part. Even tho he used the lightscabard in battle he would be more likely to hurt himself than the enemy with it.
It would have made more sense if it had the prongs slanted upwards at an angle to catch the lightsaber if it slip across the blade. However, in all of the movies this has never happened so its likely that when the sabers touch they lock together.
