Marketing genius, psychological manipulation.

Resurrection of 3D and how they marketed it as a brand new thing even though it really wasn't that different from what 3D used to be, sure, they created new camera rigs etc. but because of biological restrictions the technology itself can't be that immersive even with new tech.

But they marketed it brilliantly, as a movie you NEED TO SEE IN THE MOVIE THEATER, IN 3D. And it is a large film that benefits from the theater experience, definitely, like all of Cameron's movies really. The true technological advancement wasn't 3D but the way they pushed performance capture forwards, and that was an impressive feat.

It married new technology with a familiar story that relied on tropes that have been prevalent in some form in most cultures and in their myths and folklore. I'm not sure how much Titanic gave it a boost but can't hurt that it was from the same director.

Interesting to see how the sequel will do, it won't have the 3D boom going for it again, the performance capture technology has taken new steps (for example the Ape movies had performance capture done on locations) but is that enough to impress people anymore? At least in the same capacity than in 2009? Also I don't think Cameron can rely so heavily on archetypal storytelling anymore, as well as it worked for the first film, lot of people were pissed about it. The sequel will make lots of money but it won't reach the same heights if they don't try to be more innovative with it, especially with the story elements.
>>
>be first, proper, actual 3D experience
>be honestly gorgeous in the theaters
>be made by a very established film director
>have a genius marketing team
>????
>profit

it's not rocket science bro
>>
>>63794039
Debut of a radically superior form of 3D than what we'd seen before and repeat-viewing. Back in day in any theme park you'd have people standing in line over and over again for another turn on the VR simulators. This brought that experience into the neighborhood multiplex.
The sequel will go up on the charts but won't surpass its box office.

The foreign market is interested in stories about how the West views them.

It has a 2nd-world aesthetic with 3rd-world subjects.
>>
>>63794672

He's one of those directors that likes to do lot of camera operating on his own so he's probably strapped that he won't drop off when he's having a camera on his shoulders

I saw it 6 times in theatres

It was the 3D meme.

James opened up his own theater in the Ukraine and spent his own money to fill it up. All the money went back to him while still being able to say the movie made billions.

>During the chase scene that sees the Robert Patrick’s T-1000 pursuing our heroes in a helicopter, that weaves under and over bridges on a long stretch of highway, the director’s camera operator expressed his concerns that the stunt was too dangerous to shoot and wished not to be involved. So it was that Cameron acted as his own camera operator – strapping himself to the side of the escaping SWAT van and urging the helicopter to come closer and closer as it barreled down the road.

>In the scene where the seven-mile long Florida bridge has been eviscerated by Harrier jets, Cameron had asked his leading lady if she would mind doing the part where she dangles from the speeding helicopter herself. When Curtis asked what he would be doing while she was screaming her lungs out over the thirty-foot drop, he told her ‘I’ll be shooting you.’ So Cameron once again acted as his own camera-man and, hanging out of the helicopter door, filmed a very brave Jamie Lee Curtis.

>Much like Jamie Lee Curtis in True Lies, Kate Winslet seemed to have a little bit of trouble believing the audacity of the director when she saw the gimble-rigged model of the Titanic (which she would soon be stuck at the top of) tilted vertically in preparation for its final descent. Not exactly thrilled at the prospect of being suspended fifty feet in the air, the actress stormed up to Cameron and said ‘Well where the hell are you going to be while I’m stuck up there?’, to which Cameron responded ‘About fifty feet above you, hanging over the edge of that plank with a camera.’ Kate started getting ready to go up.

I can't wait for Jimbo to break cinematic ground once again with Avatar 2, and subsequently top Avatar's gross.

48FPS is coming boys.
>>
>>63794451
He's going to do a lot of underwater scenes in the first sequel. Imagine The Abyss with todays technology. It's going to be gorgeous.
>>
>>63795445
Imagine if Based Jim did a film with Tim Cruise

Would either of them survive to tell the tale?

I saw that film while deployed on a torrent download copy. Was not impressed with dances with smurfs, immediately sympathize with Colonel onelinemcbadass.

Get home from fighting a war against primitive shitskins, everyone loves that film and can't shut up about it.

Fuck my life.

>Arnie will be back once again as James Cameron is partnering with DMG Entertainment and Studiocanal to return Terminator 2: Judgment Day to global cinemas in a digitally remastered 3D rerelease.

>DMG and StudioCanal will work with Cameron to supervise and produce the 3D conversion using the latest technology from StereoD

>The new Terminator 2 3D is targeting a worldwide release in 2016, but a key target market is understood to be China, where the conversion will make its global premiere courtesy of DMG's China branch, DMG Yinji, working with China Film Group.

What a time to be alive.

He has no right to say any of that. He was a tool, the kind of guy who would prevent history's greatest discoveries if he was ordered to. His attempts at looking badass seemed more petty than anything.
>>
>>63796610
He seemed more like every grizzeled old sergeant major I ever served with. Crass and to the point. Tired of seeing his men die to some primitive little shits who haven't evolved beyond hippie treehugging bullshit.

They were all cartoonishly portrayed in that film.

>>
>>63796998
The discoveries the scientists were making were far more valuable for humanity than any unobtanium, but he was willing to shut everything down so his bosses could get rich with that non-renewable source of energy.
In another time he would have prevented scientists from making space travel possible if told so, and likely rationalize it with muh patriotism or some shit.

Marketing, 3D gimmick, muh ultra realistic CGI gimmick, coasting off the name of a director who used to be good.
>>
Cause it looked very original. There were TV specials about the special effects in the movie. Sam Worthington was still relevant and Cameron directing it meant it was going to be good. He also hadn't directed anything for awhile if I remember
>>
>>63794039
extremely safe lowest common denominator + easier to please developing country audiences

>>63798368
it wasn't marketing. It was word of mouth. "Hey dude go check out the glowing 3D forest".

Simple as that. Story was a rehash of other films but entertaining.

If they had seen it in cinema they wouldn't need a blu-ray because it would already be drilled into their brain. Around the 15/16th viewing it sticks.

How? I'll explain in to you
>literally every single day there was an ad in the newspaper that went
>GO WATCH AVATAR
>JAMES CAMERON TITANIC
>NEW 3D ABSOLUTELY MUST WATCH
And this is me talking about my shitty country and the shitty newspapers that don't usually do such things. The movie was hyped up for months before release every fucking day.

does it being 3d and ticket prices being more expensive have something to do with it

making the tickets cost more than usual was a bold move

and it paid off
