Both seasons.

Remember to shitpost as much as possible.

Opening prompt: what did Caspere know?

Is the second season as good as the first? And is Rust in it?
>>
did they ever confirm s3?
>>
>>63754565
Highly subjective and literally no one can agree. I thought it was worse in overall quality, but despite that it's probably my favorite season of TV ever. Can elaborate if asked why.

No, Rust isn't in it. Totally new cast, totally new story.

>>63754634
HBO ordered two more seasons after S1 and one of the prods let slip that they're working on scripts right now. No solid confirmation though.

K. Slight spoilers incoming

1. Cast was great. Nobody is going to argue that Farrell and McAdams weren't, but I also thought Kitsch and Vaughn did great work with extremely difficult roles. Kitsch seems wooden at first, but you eventually figure out that it's just an act his character is putting on. Same thing with Vaughn. I think that Vaughn's work in the final episode is some of the strongest acting I've ever seen.

That said, his scenes with Kelly Reilly are pretty weak. I'm going to chock it up equally to the writing and to Reilly's performance. She was def the weak link.

2. The characters. Velcoro is easily the most surface-level, but also easily the most entertaining. Paul's a mystery, but he grows on you as you start putting together the pieces. Frank and Ani are also great in different ways. Ani is basically a stereotype at first, but the show subverts it really, really well. And Frank is one of the most human, most complex characters I've ever encountered.

3. Pays homage to genre while examining how it works. This isn't a plus so much as it is a general observation, but I liked how all of the characters were archetypes (cowboy, gangster, bad boy, bad girl) but also much much more.

4. There's a lot more visual intelligence at work than people think. Great use of anamorphic vs. spherical lensing. Character framing/reframing and repeated shot compositions throughout the season, though you have to pay close attention to catch them.

5. The story. It's absurdly complicated and doesn't always make a hell of a lot of sense. But I don't think it matters so much as the people at the center.

It's about four lonely failures trying to fight a darkness that they can't understand. It's not just about their fuckups, though. It's also about the love they give in their small ways.

Season 1 was entertaining. Season 2 is sad, but there's hope behind the heartbreak.

Production was scatterbrained in terms of plot direction. I understand it's a mystery crime thriller but come on.

I had no idea what the fuck the scene with Vaughn was about in the end when he died

Well-put, specifically in regard to t he the "lonely failures trying to fight a darknes" - I think many here identified with that specific aspect of it and were able to enjoy it far more than a typical HBO viewer. Everyone I know who doesn't visit 4chan hated S2, whereas here it's quite popular. I for one loved it.

Season 1 was great, it set up a mystery that was solved and did a fairly good job at unraveling the case while still having some good character development.

Season 2 had good elements but I think it suffered from juggling too much, season 1 saw developments in the case in every episode, sometimes the case seemed secondary in season 2. There were 4 main characters so to speak and I don't think they all got enough time, the perspective of a criminal was interesting and I think it would have been a great addition to the story if there were 2 detectives. Having 3 detectives and Frank's perspective left the story crowded, and less focused on the case.

Yea I agree, season 1 was really concise, everything mattered. In season 2 it seemed like there were a lot of things that just didn't end up panning out, I feel like they stretched themselves too thin. Honestly I feel like you could have completely gotten rid of Taylor Kitsch's character for one.

Something i thought i never see. Thank you.

Can you give some examples of the framing / composition?

I will agree with this to an extent. I didn't feel that the story was crowded, and I think that the unfocus on the case was intentional (and that it worked).

But I think that there should have been some restructuring. The second half of the season worked much, MUCH better than the first. I think that's because the first half was mainly focused on setting up the characters while the second was about actually putting pressure on them and seeing them change.

I can try.

1. Ray/Frank are always framed the same way: Frank on the left, Ray on the right, across from each other. Even the last shot of them shaking hands is like this. It only changes during the Ray/Frank standoff.

2. The closeups on Ani's knife practice (on the dummy) is framed the same way as the shot where she grabs the rapist's hand

3. Basically every single shot of Paul in action (riding his bike, during the shootouts, crawling for his gun) has him moving towards the camera (this one might not be intentional though)

4. Similarly, Frank addresses the camera (not literally, but it's simply framed that way) only during the rat monologue and his final encounter with Jordan

Some of these are dubious, but you get my point.

Also (can't find this on Youtube, sorry), I really liked the scene where Ani browses porn. I don't think it's meant to mirror any other images in the show, but I liked the way it was shot:

Extreme closeup on her chin and lips, slightly open
Her fingers stroking the keyboard, screen out of focus
Her eyes staring down into it

Three extreme closeups not only set the scene, but also the overly erotic mood. Really strange, really well done. Not the kind of thing you see on TV (or in most movies) often.

Here's a primer. Especially noticeable on some of the shallow-focus closeups, like when Paul's first hit with the blowjob allegation, or when Frank burns down his clubs, or during the desert walk.

In fact, I think it's a lot more prevalent in Frank's scenes in general.

Season 1 was some of the most perfect tv I've ever seen.

I didn't watch Season 2.

What are they planning for season 3?
