So what's the story with the First Order?
It's basically the Empire, right? But why would anyone want to bring the Empire back outside of a handful of politicians and bureaucrats?
I mean, the Empire was attractive because it was on top of everything. It was powerful as fuck, the most powerful organization in the universe. That was basically the ideology behind it: it wasn't about some political ideal as much as it was authority for its own sake. This is why people enlisted to become troopers or pilots, because they're adventurers or somewhat opportunistic (even Luke talks about joining the academy in the beginning of ANH and he's definitely not some fascist half-wit).
This raises the question why would anyone support a minuscule version of the Empire. What benefits you could possibly procure from something that's basically an ultra-violent opposition group? If the sole raison d'etre of the Empire was power, what can it be once it's been ousted?

A huge empire just doesn't disintegrate overnight. Even after Rome fell, the Eastern Roman empire survived for centuries. When Palpatine died, probably just like in the EU, it probably surcumbed to infighting from senior officers now warlords trying to carve out their own little kingdoms. For the people inside those systems, everything remained the same, the empire didn't fall. The Empire meant stability for many, also it was Human sumpremicist which would unite many humans against non-humans

There are always people that cling to hollow symbolism. Most people were in the Nazi party because of the practical advantage sit gave them in political and everyday life. And the army was just the army of the nation. But even today there are die hard Neonazis.

I mean the whole point about the rise of the Empire is that it brought peace and security. The PT actually does a half-decent job in establishing that: the Clone War ended basically on the very day the Empire was created. What sense does it make to continue fighting if your entire purpose was to bring peace?

Who says the Galactic Empire stands for nothing? It claims direct lineage from the Galactic Republic which we know was there for thousands of years. There is obvioulsy a Pan-galactic identity that makes people feel unfied (Culture, Language, Species) with a wish to extend that soveignty under one banner. I use the Roman Empire as an example again, while it was multi ethnic and emcompassed many different people and languages, it brought a shared legal system, infrastructure and trade

Anyway, what we know about the Empire (unless it was cut of course) from things like the Tarkin Doctrine, is that its only purpose was to have the absolute superiority in terms of superior firepower. It wasn't particularly socialist, or communist, or Nazi, or anything like it; it didn't have a common religion or creed. It was just about bringing peace and order; that was the idea of building something like the Death Star which gives you total military primacy.
Now, once you lose this primacy, why the fuck are you still around?

Inconflict and factionalism is a natural part of any populist movement. The Nazi's has the Leftist Stasserite Wing which Hitler purged and the Conservative Revoutionaries which tried to kill him. There is always a struggle for power no matter where it is.
The First Order obviously tries to claim legitimacy from Palpatine's Empire aswell, it may one of or the only remnant of the Galactic Empire but it obviously feels itself to be the purest continuation

Human Supremicism is not exactly canon, it's only been made explicit in EU soources. Humouring it though Humans form a large section of the Galactic population, they are spred all out to the outer rim. It makes sense they would sense attraction to a powerful organisation that gives them privledge over all over species. In Syria, while the Alawites only form a small minority they rule top government positions and have higher social status because they organise the state that way. Even should Assad and Damascus fall, that is not the end of Syrian Ba'athism, it's very likely a rump state would form in the Alawite majority region near the med coast

Palpatine called his Empire "The New Order" so "First Order" is obviously a lend of this and trying to gain legitimacy from it, as is the symbol a reworking of the old IMperial logo. Who is to say the "Galactic Empire" is not still used on some formal basis within their state, it possibly still is. Some of the reasons for the change could be to differentiate from some other existing Imperial remnants, or signify while it claims linage from the Empire it is a different reformed organisation that does not claim its failures
