There's a huge difference at the beginning, with Ripley and the news of her daughter. Hell, you could just insert that scene into the Theatrical and it would work perfectly.

Extended is the only correct answer. The only way Ripley can go after Newt at all is because the sentry guns ate most of the xenomorph population. Without that scene, there's no explanation why the path to the queen is empty.
