I understand Doug wants to try new stuff but I don't think his old ways are that bad. In fact i enjoyed him coming back to his old style even if briefly. He made clear he wants to go forwards but I hope he gets to rescue the parts of his old reviews that actually worked. Referencing other movies and using fun quips was fun and I hope he goes back to that.

Problem is those old style videos can be flagged for copyright infringement very easily. With blip gone Doug's main revenue stream is YouTube where infringement strikes can come easily and often, in fact he's faced tons before. It's tough to argue you're protected under fair use when you're literally just snarling over half the movies content.
That's what the skit style reviews are about - avoiding using any copyrighted material, but the problem is they aren't actually funny. At all.
CinemaSins has had the same problem, since even more so they just talk over the best parts of a movie. You'll notice in more recent videos they pitch shift the audio down so it can't be instaflagge drier copyright strikes by YouTube.

They really aren't funny. And the problem is the same as with Demo Reel, and the same as all the anniversary movies:
Doug Walker is a shit director. Not the fun kind of shit director, either, like an Ed Wood or that cokehead film student I met that one time.
He's shit like a first year film student who's about to flunk out, with no sense of composition, no editing chops, an inability to direct actors to be anything but cartoonish and infantile, and of course worse of all, delusions of not being terrible.
He found a niche, and was okay at that niche. But he's delusional if he thinks he's actually any good at making film. With the money he had, with the ability to actually get a fucking studio and an audience that might have been willing to try out his new work, a competent director could have done something worth seeing.
Doug Walker and his groupies are not competent at that level. Once you start to compete with the big boys, it all comes out.

Fair use when it comes to "reviews" is literally not how online reviewers use it. Literally looking at that Stanford article you can see the issue with his "reviews". Fair use is not a catch all term but especially not with Doug et al.

I hahve to say I disagree with you, but it's good to discuss these things.
I think it's a telling sign that they were always on Blip and not YT for the longest time because even they knew that it was against the terms of Fair Use and now they're trying to edit footage as best as they can to not trigger ContentID matches.
I think while you can argue either side I'm definitely more on the side of this isn't fair use. It's barely parody (which seems to be a very American crutch to rely on, at best the skits are parody and they are making up a larger part of the videos so that's okay), but using actual clips to tell the entire plot of the text is not fair use (IMO).
I think my problem is that it there isn't anything "transformative" with the original. It's not like it's being turned into something different, it's still the same story being told just shorter and with an annoying loud guy.
I should mention that's not just Doug, but he is one of the bigger culprits, and he's silly enough to use current/well-known films too.
