At best 20-25% of those screenplays actually get finished and at best only like 10% go through any sort of revision..
I work for an agent/editor who sells shit to film companies/publishers. He asks me for my opinion on screenplays/novel manuscripts and most of it is fucking horrible. We get a lot of stuff that looks solid but the writer refuses to work with us on making it better because "it's already perfect."
If you are a writer that has the ability to look at your shit and go "wow this is pretty terrible I need to change some stuff" and can also listen to the advice that people who look at writing for a living and know what does/doesn't work then you're already better than like 85% of other writers. Learn to bend but not break and if you have some modicum of talent you'll prob have some success eventually.
College means fuckall too. It'll help you become a better writer sure but it's not needed. We recently got a good deal with one of the big publishers about something written by a 37 year old who dropped out of high school and has worked shit jobs while writing in his spare time. Dude just straight up has talent and the ability to revise.
Go for it anon. Write your screenplay then rip it to shreds afterward. Keep doing that till it's good.

It's not an action blockbuster that is practically guaranteed to make back what they spend so the risk is too high and the script never gets picked up. He'd have to go to a smaller studio where they don't have the resources to make it and market it correctly.

Eh I won't lie and say there's an easy answer. We get clients now and then who are slow to trust because they've been ripped off before. The chance of it happening is pretty small because it's easy for a company to get found out and while usually nothing happens to them, there's always the possibility of huge backlash. No company likes having the stigma that they've ripped off people before attached to them.
Use your instincts. If you're unsure, get a lawyer. There are lawyers who specialize in novels/screenwriting that will make any company have second thoughts of ripping you off. They usually aren't too expensive and can probably also advise you on reputable companies to go through. A lot of those guys have companies they work directly with and share clients with.
Honestly I recommend just getting a lawyer period, even if you trust the company.
