I enjoy the books as the pulpy babby sci-fi they are, but that first episode was so incredibly poorly paced. I can't imagine this surviving.

Then again, it's SYFY or whatever, and they kept Stargate chugging for over a decade.

It's a testament to Tom Jane's talents that he could make such a generic Gristle Hardapple detective so entertaining. He's really going for it in a way I wasn't expecting, he's got some seriously terrible and generic dialogue that he commits to and makes it work.

Don't get me wrong, I'm gonna keep watching because I like the stories, but I don't think it's gonna catch on with people. Plus it'll be a bit weird with the end of the first novel after all this focus on Detective Punisher.

no, sex to retain viewers in a science fiction program means that they're aiming for the lowest common denominators who are confused that their wrestling program isn't on.

its good?

I read the novels and liked them- very fun. Have my doubts on the show as some of the major plot points have to do with how gravity effects the body growing up making Earthlings/Belters/Martians look different even at a glance as well as how low gravity scenes will look on a syfy show.

China had a population explosion. Suddenly there's a lot more mouths to feed and jobs to fill. Deng opens trade with the West, agrees to provide cheap factory labour for manufacturing and assembly. This gamble propels the Chinese people from feudal illiterate farmers to business minded entrepreneurs and rapidly urbanized city workers. Standard of living increases drastically for everyone. They are constantly having worker's rights disputes and renegotiating contracts. Companies offer attractive salaries, I have Chinese friends who earn 3-5k USD a month as secretaries and internal sales staff for a wide variety of companies. Their cost of living is about 3 times cheaper than the US.

Tell me more about your general ignorance. Things are CONSTANTLY improving for Chinese workers from the lowest factory/assembly hand who is joining a union or collective, arranging better hours and benefits, organising strikes and walkouts, to HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS of middle class Chinese who work in cities and have a growing appetite for spending and travel, matched only by their growing income and endless job opportunities.

What is the US solution for low income earners? Endless government benefits as a stop gap. Welfare.

The Devil aliens are just messengers/intermediaries/angels to the real threat, which is the Overmind.
>>
>>63693864
thats unfortunate, part of why I was surprised to hear it becoming a tv series

>>63693889
Fedora dude is a burn out. The books are half Noir: in space and half goody-two-shoe Mary sues and stus on a adventure romp. The books are fun, but nothing pushing the literary boundary. The ship explanation and interplanetary soap-opera politics are what make them fun (for me).

Guys, please. The Expanse thread. Not like this...it was never supposed to be like this...
>>
>>63693981
>>Buhh i want everyone else to sacrifice for the greater good but not me i'm special.
What? I said absolutely nothing about sacrificing for a greater good you cunt. All I've said is that people in Third World countries are exploited, which is a fucking fact.
>Who and what did you vote for this year?
Local elections mostly. Not in America.
>>
>>63694004
It really is though. He hits on his ex, she rejects him and says he looks terrible. He drinks alone in his apartment. He takes bribes. He looks unclean and unshaven all the time.
>>
>>63694016
Well, I wouldn't go so far as to say they're infact devils. It's kind of played as ambiguous as to whether it's ultimately a good thing.
>>
Why aren't they all floating around in their suits on the spaceship? They is very little gravity in the vacuum of space.
>>
>>63694025
I'm hoping it survives long enough to see Venus. The virus and the conspiracy stuff surrounding that is the most interesting part to me.

Magnetic boots

K
>>
>>63694151
But they are able to lay on their backs and shit? They aren't even standing up and they don't float.
>>
i sure hope this lasts like 5 seasons so they get to the part where earth gets rekt, also these rail guns in ep 4 are tiiiiiite
>>
>>63694188
The ships spin constantly I believe, to create artificial gravity.
>>
>>63694196

Now why'd you have to go and say that
>>
>>63694224
No, the ships are accelerating most of the time when they're moving and this causes the crew experiences artificial gravity. It's explained more in the books.
>>
>>63694049
>What? I said absolutely nothing about sacrificing for a greater good you cunt. All I've said is that people in Third World countries are exploited, which is a fucking fact.

If those people aren't exploited then you will have to pay a shitload more for quite a few products. Do you offset this by donating parts of your income to overseas charities? How are you doing your part other than whining at nobody on the internet?

>Local elections mostly. Not in America.
If you can't remember their names then you either didn't do proper research or you're just bullshitting again.

Be the change you want to see in the world. Don't just fucking complain about it and expect someone else to fix it.
>>
>>63694124
Im also excited to see terraforming space virus and gate and giant mormon ship turned shitty death star. If they can pull it off. How are the ships/cgi/ general design ascetic?
>>
>>63694188
Magnetic backs
>>
>>63694224
You accelerate for the first half of the journey, then decelerate for the second half.
>>
>>63694224
>>63694314
>>63694107
The ships are built like towers/skyscrapers, where the 'floor' is pointing down towards the engine and 'up' is the front of the ship. The ship reaches a state of thrust creating the 'gravity' during long voyages. I dont know how the tv series explains it, but thats from the books. Decelerating/ accelerating are a big deal and the most dangerous part (like landing and lift off in a plane).
>>
>>63694387
Somewhere between europa report and chronicle.

Pretty bad.

>just 12 min into the pilot
>oh shit we dumped the most basic of science fiction plot on the audience
>better kill someone gruesomely
>oh and then a sex scene right after that
>okay now we can talk about space stuff for a bit until the audience falls asleep again.

I've never come to hate a show so quickly.

I would do this gladly, it's the moral thing.
>Do you offset this by donating parts of your income to overseas charities?
Yes, 10% of my income.
>How are you doing your part other than whining at nobody on the internet?
I work with UNHCR
>Don't just fucking complain about it and expect someone else to fix it.
I am working. Other people also need to put in effort.
>>
>>63694461
No-one was killed off gruesomely. That guy was seen a couple of scenes later. Pay attention.
>>
>>63694461
Dont know, the books are fun I'd read them again. Finish all of them in less than a few nights and see for yourself. Space Noir drunk ex-cop on Ceres was the best part.
>>
watching right now, will report back with my findings
>>
>>63694387
The ships look very good and the show is solid, ignore that autist.
>>
>>63694540
I stopped watching at the sex scene. I already knew everything the show would ever have to offer based on that and the extremely worn out setting.

>hurr colonies hurr fight for independance hurr miner lives matter hurr

SEEN IT. Didn't need sex and violence to enjoy it, either.

Go watch Jason in Space.
>>

Science fiction is the autism genre you fool.

It must be wonderful to be such a close minded cunt.

You're saying i should wait until the squatting man finishes his shit before i judge it?

But it's not. The Expanse isn't primarily a story about muh 99% in space.
>>
>>63694744

From the looks of it, magical space mcguffins and possibly aliens?

Lay it on me. How stupid does it get? Some people are praising this for being hard sci-fi. Just how space opera does it get?

It's certainly not hard sci-fi. It's more "space pulp" mixed with really weird horrifying what the hell alien virus that transforms planets and living organisms what is it doing jesus fuck we're all going to die

>>63694796
Why? would that make me fit into your narrative of life you borrowed from someone on youtube? Would it make it easier for you to argue against, if i was some evil fox news straw bogeyman?

then it goes total space nano bot ancient alien ghost collective conscious embedded in your brain lol also giant fucking worm hole mystery why are all these planets dead

Its space pulp with hard scifi tones. Its fun.
>>
>>63693934
Arthur C Clarke isn't exactly known for being kind to religions in his books. The whole Rama series basically shits on every religion.
>>
>>63694906
His first post to me ended with
>the ultimate demonstration that you're a right wing lunatic.

He's a kid. He doesn't have any experience with life nor does he have any opinions he made on his own. All he is is a collection of other people's thoughts loosely cobbled together under a hat.
>>
>>63695048
This. It's meant to be a fun pulpy adventure series with a few serious ideas flirted with.
>>
>>63695035
But it was just a sound translator!
>>
>>63695015
>What on earth are you basing this on?
Everything you've said.

I know, his chances are slim. I might have to vote for hillary just so trump doesn't take it. I'm scared as shit that everyone on the left is just going to sit it out as some sort of retarded protest and then ben carson or trump becomes president and i lose my obamacare.

Cool your jets, micheal, not everyone who disagrees with your limited worldview is your enemy.

What in rama 1 shits on religion? Barely anything even happens in that book.
>>
>>63694990

Wouldn't call them trolls, just annoying when any debate is immediately stifled with buzzwords like "cultural marxist" and "cuck", as
if writing those words grants you some kind of immunity shield for criticism.

I get it happens the other way around in many places (perhaps even in real life, though this is more US phenomenon), but the terms are meaningless on a site like this.
>>
>>63695123
>I know, his chances are slim. I might have to vote for hillary just so trump doesn't take it. I'm scared as shit that everyone on the left is just going to sit it out as some sort of retarded protest and then ben carson or trump becomes president and i lose my obamacare.
In this very thread you were decrying social welfare, now you're pro obamacare? You're not even trying.
>>
>>63695035
Maybe everything emits a radiation that reverberates off the ships' hull and makes a noise or there's a system that feeds an estimation of the noise things might make in an atmosphere into their headphones. Who cares just make something up.

Never did. You're just incapable of understanding that how thing should be is not how things are. As long as you expect more than the world is capable of, you'll be unhappy and lash out at everyone.

Even when people told you that china isn't being exploited you or whoever just changed gears to some other social injustice because playing the victim is all that matters.

China is being exploited, just because some people are well off in China doesn't change that. Also, "people" was you.
>>
>>63695307
>>63695325
Can you guys just go back to your central point about whether The Expanse is a shallow attempt to connect to the audience by showing the working man as the hero and big business as evildoers.
>>
>>63695325

You've probably never met a real conservative in the flesh. You just see them on tv and add it to your narrative of Us Vs. Them that the media wants you to believe.

Liberals can be just as stupid as any conservative. They're the same species. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zaxCMsdYwcg

Get a fucking clue man.
>>
>>63695347
I didn't write either big block of text that spelled out basic economics to you.

Everyone gets exploited everywhere. That's life. That you're so shocked by that just belies your lack of experience away from your mother's breast.
>>
>>63695372
The working man isn't shown as a hero though, this guy is criticising a complete straw man, and refusing to accept that any large group of people has ever been victimised by big business.
>>
>>63695425
>Everyone gets exploited everywhere. That's life. That you're so shocked by that just belies your lack of experience away from your mother's breast.
Now you've changed tack. Anyway, once again, this is a fantastic way to uphold the status quo. Durr, nothing can ever change, life is suffering durr.

There are conservatives everywhere, I have some in my family

Of course. They just happen to be more likely to be right.
>>
>>63695119
>>63695176

Honestly I can get over it, but it's kind of silly when they do this. It's not even lazy "writing", it's actually more work for no reason.

>>63695289

You forgot marxist!

>>63695307

I don't know which people told what in this thread, but the industrial revolution of China is not any different from that in Britain, poor people were exploited left and right, it's actually a pretty big deal in world history.

The same is happening in China, it might be a necessary step in all industrialized countries, but to claim people don't suffer under the system is naive.
>>
>>63695483
>Now you've changed tack. Anyway, once again, this is a fantastic way to uphold the status quo. Durr, nothing can ever change, life is suffering durr.

Not helping the whole "this guy sounds like a kid" argument.
>>
>>63695510
What does that have to do with anything?
>>
>>63695517
>There are conservatives everywhere, I have some in my family
OH NOW WE'VE FINALLY GOTTEN TO THE CENTER OF THIS MAZE.

You have father issues that you project onto anyone who sounds like him.

Case fucking closed.
>>
>>63695543

There's clearly a "man we working people living in fucking space sure have it bad, maybe we shouldn't have moved to fucking space god why won't someone give me a bailout for my mistakes?" theme to the show. it was in their 10 tons of exposition at the beginning, it sure as shit should be relevant to the overall plot.
>>
>>63695564
>You have father issues that you project onto anyone who sounds like him.
No, they're cousins. My direct family are liberals. You really aren't even trying.
>>
>>63695521
Space noise bothers me too but I guess there's a line somewhere between scientific accuracy and things that aren't boring and sometimes it comes down on one side and sometimes the other.
>>
>>63695598

Trying what? Nobody wants to argue with you about your issues. Just fucking drop the witch hunt.
>>
>>63695596
>man we working people living in fucking space sure have it bad, maybe we shouldn't have moved to fucking space god why won't someone give me a bailout for my mistakes?
People can be forced into tough situations to survive, that doesn't mean they should have all their rights stripped from them. Your lack of empathy is telling.
>>
>>63695611

Thank god for books that don't care about appealing to trump voters.
>>
>>63695627

>>63695651
Uhh Trump is literally going to win
>>
>>63695632
There are no laws in space. What did they fucking expect? Kindness? Humans only have rights when they earn them. It's not a physical law.
>>
>>63695596
>it sure as shit should be relevant to the overall plot
Not the anon you're replying to, but this ends up being a much more minor plot running through the larger story. It doesn't progress how you might predict from that alone.
>>
>>63695596
Actually I sensed some pride in their being belters, Seems more like a new race of people rather than ex-pats that can return to earth when they want.

>>
>>63695699

Then they're shit at storytelling. If you hang a gun on the wall, you fucking use it.
>>
>>63695689
>there are no laws in space
Anywhere there's people, there's laws or should be. That's kind of how society works. If there aren't any, that's a violation

>Humans only have rights when they earn them.
This justifies literally endless manner of abuse. And anyway, you were shitting on the marxist when he's trying to earn those rights. Should he just lie down and accept anything because his ancestors made a mistake?
>>
>>63695611

I guess people just like space noice, I bet they have screenings of the episodes where they bring it up and see what the audience prefers.
>>
>>63695738
It's not a film, there's room for padding out the backdrop.
>>
>>63695715

>>
>>63695744
>Anywhere there's people, there's laws or should be. That's kind of how society works. If there aren't any, that's a violation

a violation of what? galactic code? fuck's sake, here you go again with your is and ought.

There can't be laws because nobody legally owns it. If someone legally owns it, then they can make whatever rules they choose. There is no oversight.

>This justifies literally endless manner of abuse. And anyway, you were shitting on the marxist when he's trying to earn those rights. Should he just lie down and accept anything because his ancestors made a mistake?
God you just have such an axe to grind.

Rama 1's events caused global war when the religious freaked out about confirmed aliens.

Weird i don't remember that. I remember the long boring trips to different places, the orangutan slaves, and the ending where nothing really happens.
>>
So should I watch this show or what?
>>
>>63695820
>a violation of what? galactic code? fuck's sake, here you go again with your is and ought.
Laws are all made by humans, there is no such things as inherent existing law. You're basically arguing against the very concept of law and society.

Nobody legally owns countries either. That's not how countries work. The rights of the people are what matter in law.

>God you just have such an axe to grind
You made such stupid points, it bears repeating.
