They probably do but just never got given the right Uniforms. Pretty sure US troops went into Iraq (either 1991 or 2003 invasion) with Green camo flak jackets simply because that was what they had to hand. Not too hard to believe they got diverted from another deployment or came from a green planet

In that Technical Manual book thing that they released with the film, it says they were on their way back to Earth for some R&R after fighting a war against a rebellion. The mission to the colony was just a little sideshow since they were on their way home.
