I know it's the joke, but it's a weird joke that makes the story thinner and weaker. There are earlier instance of stories not making sense in the chronology and logic of the show's universe), but they clearly joke at it, because, hey, it doesn't matter at all (example: Bart and Lisa asking Homer why didn't they know about Homer's music career before, and what happened with all the money and stuff he earned in those months). But "Homer's Barbeshop Quartet" is a light-weight episode that is played for laughs (like "Bart Gets An Elephant"), whereas "Curse of the Flying Hellfish" has a more serious and darker story where Grampa's life is explored, where we see some attempts at suspense, and that stuff. The Simpsons was a lot of things back then, but full of suspense and inconsistencies wasn't some of its traits, at least before the show started going to hell from Season 7 onwards.

No one of those scenes are vital to the story of each respective episode. Who cares if the house was set on fire in a sho where no one ages? How exactly the two Homers joke affects the story of that episode?
The joke at the location of the treasure, though, is vital to the episode. They need to find some way to reach the location as indicate by the light, they need some way to reach the bottom of the sea, and they need to be able to transport the treasure back to the coast. If the treasure isn't at the bottom of the sea, then the rest of the episode must follow a different path.
