perhaps i don't. watched it once a long time ago and from what i remember, travis is 100% total creep, then decides to add a couple more % to the creepiness, then ends up working out meeting a child prostitute, then shaves his head and tries to kill a politician (why), kills some the pimps and seems happy for everything he's done.
the movie has no message. the character has no arc, he didn't learn anything

Most exploitation movies. An ironic case is Sam Peckinpah, he wanted to turn people off from violence, but he shot his stuff so well that he got the opposite effect. John Woo's The Killer and Hardboiled revel in violence.
