This is one of the worst films I've ever seen. It's the kind of thing that results when you sit a STEM major down in a room, hold a gun to their head, and tell them to make "art." It's confusing without texture, nonsensical without atmosphere, and has no conscious or subconscious insight about anything human or vital. It's at least better in a technical sense than his previous film, Mumbler, but at least that had a cohesive script. I'm sure Carrouth would launch at me now, telling me 'Script? Script!? The point is that it's so abstract, it's like j-jazz!' but I doubt he could back up any of his artistic choices here if you probed any deeper than his indulgent tendency to surface-level subvert without purpose.
>>

You don't wanna work for me, what's wrong with you? And then, you carry a piece, in my house! You one of those burned-out demolished wackos in the joint? You're scary, because you don't give a fuck. But don't come onto me now with your jailhouse bullshit 'cause you are not that guy, dont'chu get it, you prick? You got a home, car, businesses, family, n' I own the paper on ya whole fuckin' life. I'll put ya cunt wife on the street to be fucked in the ass by niggers and Puerto Ricans. Ya kids mine because I bought 'it. You got 'im on loan, he is leased, you are renting him. I'll whack out ya whole family. People'll be eatin' 'em in their lunch tomorrow in their Wimpyburgers and not know it. You get paid what I say. You do what I say, I run you, there is no discussion. I want, you work, until you are burned-out, you are busted, or you're dead... you get it? You got responsibilities - tighten up n' do it. Clean this mess up, get 'im outta here. >Was I not supposed to know that half of the movie was filming of the other movie until near the end?
Yes. The character is experiencing confusion about her identity while filming, so the film reflects this by slowly peeling away any sort of grounding context, so you don't know when she's her and when she's her character. It's like Mulholland Drive in that every confusing notion in it is vaguely about cinema, but instead of being about the Hollywood industry it's about the practice of acting.

Other films along this line would be Persona, Perfect Blue, and Black Swan - paranoiac visions of an actress bleeding into her work/role. It's supposed to evoke the truly bizarre activity that is acting, where you may sometimes find yourself becoming your character (many, many actors have commented on this) and feeling truly transported into their world.

All the stuff about the curse is and the rabbits is a framing device. Think of the rabbits as the core to the film - they're in a central room in a labyrinth, and they're the basis of the story that keeps getting repeated in different mediums. Maybe they were a fairy tale. If you watch Lynch's web-series Rabbits, the purgatorial quality of it will make sense of what they function as here - a nexus point of a curse cycle that needs breaking.

The end of the film is the breaking of the curse. The ending of shooting, going back to your own identity, taking lessons from the subject matter you just lost yourself in. The whore character who's reunited with her husband and son I think is supposed to represent the viewer - who can also learn something essential by viewing cinema, and who can also bleed into a movie and get lost inside of it.

This is why the opening shot is a woman watching the movie itself. The film is about the people who get grabbed inside of the film medium itself.

>>
>>63615933
She seemed to be warning Nikki away from the play. Which is odd, because only by submerging in the play can Nikki break the curse and release the people trapped inside. I've seen some people interpret the fade from the freed whore to the old woman as very literal, that the two are the same, that the old woman is coming from the future to try and help Nikki, because she herself was helped. That wouldn't make sense though - she could only be freed if Nikki does go ahead. It doesn't work to think about it in literal terms - which may be the point. A film can warn someone off of doing something, without having to do that thing (something like Trainspotting or Requiem for a Dream) but there's still something in watching a film that may not be literally real, but certainly feels like it. It has a deep effect. So I think that in that moment the old woman is imparting the film to Nikki, and that Nikki avoids it, and that that can only make sense if we realize that Nikki went into the story, yes, but not really, just like you can't really go inside of a film. The old woman is someone who Nikki freed, but only intangibly, and in turn helped free Nikki.

It helps I think to look at the realities in IE as concordant to a more solid reality that the film just doesn't show, ie, the serene confident Laura Dern seen on the couch at the end.

I really liked this film but I thought the first half wasn't as good as second half. I'd give it a 9/10

Also...I love the soundtrack, it doesn't fit with the film. Should have been jazz

Haha really? I just thought it when I watched the film recently. I really like the music but it just doesn't fit. Plus everyone knows Jazz is the superior soundtrack for cinema

2)classical
3)synth
4)pop music
5) dad rock
10000000) heavy metal

I'm not saying he should've dumbed it down. What he did wasn't refuse to dumb it down, what he did was on the opposite extreme and just as bad, which was superficially obfuscate.

Not even close. "Fixing ourselves" I have no idea where you got from.
It's about life transitions (bachelorhood to family life, poverty to wealth), the disappearance of social capital, friendship in the context of the above, Texas and the vast gulf between its self-image and reality, etc. It's also somewhat metafictional/autobiographical in how it relates to Carruth's critical success.
