It's more comparable to why people defend capeshit. Now admittedly, those are entertaining movies with neat special effects and whatnot, to a certain point.
These stories and characters are fundamentally childrens heroes, and you can view the portrayal and development in the industry as capitalizing on manchildrens desire to see those heroes even as adults.
This is why Batman becomes serious business, it's why so many movies are now being remade with some emphasis on believability and realism. It's less tacky, it's less campy, and there's less slapstick humour and more adult themes like sex and whatnot.

We've got Anno at the helm now. I think he's got a good eye for directing action and guys who work in animation often make good live-action directors because of the attention to detail needed when working in a medium where you have absolute control over what your audience sees.
