What is the Pet Sounds of film?
Magical Mystery Tour
Man, Pet Sounds and the SMiLE Sessions is something everybody should take a listen to.
I've listened to either one of these albums every day.
As for the question, I do not know. Honestly I feel like there's nothing like it

Dr Strangelove
Accessible classic 60s movie made by a crazy genius

HEY YOU
Some film that is 10/10.
I want to say Blow-Up
Coincidentally the same year of release, but I think there's something more there with the melancholy atmosphere and level of experimentation in a fairly conventional type structure
I've always wondered if Pet Sounds is only regarded as such a classic because Americans didn't have a Beatles and developed an inferiority complex.
It has 3 wonderful songs on it and great production but the rest feels like a standard 60s album filled with re-writes of the singles.

Dr strangelove is cynical and pet sounds celebrates innocence and the loss of it. Horrible comparison

You know, The Beach Boys
What's the film equivalent to this?

You belong in the trash.

I wouldn't say the Beatles are shit, but how you seem to regard them is laughable desu
>>63604276
Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band could have never existed without Pet Sounds leading the way. Even McCartney admits this. Deal with it
>>63604335
>pet sounds is a masterpiece start to finish
you have to admit it's not very musically diverse.
>>63604276
>Americans didn't have a Beatles and developed an inferiority complex.
You are joking, right? The UK didn't have Elvis and tried to make their own with Billy Fury and Cliff Richard (lol).
The UK always has an inferiority complex when it comes to rock and roll. Britpop was a insecure reaction to Grunge ffs.

The fact that so many books still name the Beatles as "the greatest or most significant or most influential" rock band ever only tells you how far rock music still is from becoming a serious art. Jazz critics have long recognized that the greatest jazz musicians of all times are Duke Ellington and John Coltrane, who were not the most famous or richest or best sellers of their times, let alone of all times. Classical critics rank the highly controversial Beethoven over classical musicians who were highly popular in courts around Europe. Rock critics are still blinded by commercial success. The Beatles sold more than anyone else (not true, by the way), therefore they must have been the greatest. Jazz critics grow up listening to a lot of jazz music of the past, classical critics grow up listening to a lot of classical music of the past. Rock critics are often totally ignorant of the rock music of the past, they barely know the best sellers. No wonder they will think that the Beatles did anything worthy of being saved.
In a sense, the Beatles are emblematic of the status of rock criticism as a whole: too much attention paid to commercial phenomena (be it grunge or U2) and too little to the merits of real musicians. If somebody composes the most divine music but no major label picks him up and sells him around the world, a lot of rock critics will ignore him. If a major label picks up a musician who is as stereotyped as can be but launches her or him worldwide, your average critic will waste rivers of ink on her or him. This is the sad status of rock criticism: rock critics are basically publicists working for major labels, distributors and record stores. They simply highlight what product the music business wants to make money from.
Hopefully, one not-too-distant day, there will be a clear demarcation between a great musician like Tim Buckley, who never sold much, and commercial products like the Beatles.

>The UK didn't have Elvis and tried to make their own with Billy Fury and Cliff Richard (lol).
sameanon here, I have no trouble acknowledging this. it's not a competition.
my point was how much artistic status Pet Sounds is afforded doesn't quite match the tracklisting. even something like Forever Changes is a better album for me.
>>63602417
How is that a "is this just me" question? Obviously it is, one song's chorus is "sometimes I feel very sad"

The British were the first to love Pet Sounds anyway

I really can't think of anything like it, I wish there was a film like it though. The second half of the album, to me, is one of the most uplifting and powerful pieces of music I've ever heard

>The second half of the album, to me, is one of the most uplifting and powerful pieces of music I've ever heard
You must be a kekold because it's literally impossible for a non-white to make anything with "power" anything that is "uplifting". The entire black music industry is just one big heap of PC pandering that got out of hand. It is reddit to disagree. It is "kekold cleanup" to disagree.

The Beatles were inspired by Pet Sounds you inbred kekistanian
The Beach Boys are so comfy. My favorite band of all time. Just so good to listen to. Posting some of my favorite non-Pet Sounds songs. I think Today! is a really overlooked album. Probably my favorite. Dem harmonies.
