a) It's a star wars thing. Weapons of mass space destruction. At least it's a more interesting MacGuffin than whatever economic-political thing was the big objective in the prequels.
b) It's a modern movie thing. Capeshit, i.e. every single fucking big movie these days, has to follow the same formula where there's some planet-destroying weapon employed by some off-planet bad guy, and the good guys come together in a team to defeat him in an exhausting 45-minute action sequence at the end.

I think what made R2 great is he had his own little adventure. I remember as a kid in the original trilogy the first part on Tattoine was so hard to watch cause R2 was all alone and I was scared.
