Ever since the initial 2014 demise and resurrection, /lbg/ has been nothing, but a rotting zombie corpse of what once was. Only reason I still come back is for occasionally getting to witness Healey get BTFO.

My favorite movie commentary is the one they made for Brotherhood of the Wolf. It's just the two main actors making fun of the movie the whole time.

Update: the Alpha Papa commentary is alright, passable.

literally why are no commentaries as good as Stiglegger + Keßler power duo. Most likeable film historians of all time probably

It honestly was, Rocky IV is a worse retread of III, Rocky V had something new to say
>>
>>63608446
That sounds hot. I'd maybe even pop it in my mouth
>>
>>63609080
iv is far from a retread of iii and rocky v having something new to say is the dumbest fucking thing i've heard. i really want you to go more into it.
>>
>>63609301
IV is literally III again without the novelty of creed and rocky teaming up.

Drago is a blander Clubber Lang, Apollo dying was a lazier way of getting the same reaction out of rocky/the audience as Mick, the characterization was thrown out in favor of three montages and a fight halfway through the film.

I could see this being a favorite rocky film as a kid, but in terms of character and emotion, iv was the low point.

It was a fun, cheesy 80's movie, but thats all it will ever be.

Rocky V finally got back to focusing on the characters, the idea of an over the hill boxer living vicariously through a younger boxer that he is training is interesting to me, especially how it gets between him and his family. Seeing rocky out of such wealth and with more of his old characterization made him easier to root for. Sure, the son and Tommy could have been better developed, but as it is it's a solid entry, if a bit different

Some of the films there seem really weird

Why would you explicitly exclude stuff like Titanic, but then Hunger Games 2: ESSEBTIAL for criticism of film. And stuff like Killer Condom.
>>
>>63602748
Enjoyed most of what I've seen so far. I changed lowered my rating of The Imposter half a star, but I've pretty much only been seeing good stuff lately. I think The Virgin Spring is the best Bergman I've seen in a while -- I'm glad to not see one of his films where all the characters have to levy acerbic diatribes at each other constantly. This one wasn't preachy, either, or too "big question"-heavy. Really recommend it to anyone who hasn't seen it.

It's got a lot of Christian themes in it, the whole message I got from it was that you need to retain faith in God throughout hard times in life. As an agnostic I felt like the whole movie was incredibly obnoxious and arrogant. Visually it was absolutely beautiful. On par with Koyaanisqatsi for nature shots. Maybe I need to watch it again, but I think my views on religion as a whole prohibits me from finding any real value in the whole movie as it's so heavily focusing on faith.

What a shit list, so many of these films are only notable for being experimental in some way and aren't at all essential to see to criticize film, other picks just don't make sense at all like hunger games or speed racer. He doesn't even include major films from many of the major genres or movements in film history. It's almost identical to his favorites list too.

Enjoy your imperfect log. Be sure to add the Lotr trilogy once you've seen all three films, and don't forget The Jinx or the pilot of Twin Peaks!
>>
>>63644011
Where do you stand on the the Dekalog, the Three Colors trilogy and Berlin Alexanderplatz?
>>
>>63644152
No way that autist has even heard of them.

Very complicated cases. Most references I've found point to Dekalog and Berlin to be TV series, and Three Colors to be three separate films, but it does bother me. I don't think the Three Colors were ever shown on TV (I mean of course someone bought the rights to do so eventually but you know what I mean), while Dekalog was always intended as a TV production even though they all debuted in festivals prior to that debut.

Example?

I'm glad he was though, the series was great.

video art, installation art, certain experimental films

why does it have to be so difficult? just log it if you want
>>
does anyone use Kodi or something similar? How well does it fetch information overall? I'm afraid I will have to manually input names all the time...
>>
>>63644459
there are none of those here so i've never been to one and won't have to worry about it. if they didn't get a proper release and are not on a museum/online archival i probably won't log them though

and ideally your list has to be consistent. yeah just log it if you want i just want one that is consistent and non-contradictory.

i mean, whatever works for you i guess.

i personally don't care if it was shown on tv or in a theater or online or nowhere. i'd like it if we could log tv and stuff too though. if only cinemos/rym/whatever had a diary function...

15 euros to watch the whole Apu trilogy on a big screen is the best deal I've had in a while.
I recommend watching it all in one go, it felt like watching chapters from one continuous movie.

Also, In the Heart of the Sea was absolute trash, don't waste your time and money it's not worth it

I really wanted to but the local theater only played one per month. I got the next best thing by watching it in on a large television at least. Glad you liked it.

I hated Rush. It's edited like a music video or movie trailer. No rhythm or flow at all and everyone is a caricature.

If you're interested in the story at all there's a vastly superior documentary about Lauda out there.
>>
>>63645015
That's too bad, althought it's cool you have a nice big TV. The theater I went to is showing it everyday (though not necessarily in the right order) until at least the end of december; if anyone is in France right now and is interested, it's at the Filmotheque du Quartier Latin

not really sure why it bothered me so much more than other kaufman films (i still really like synecdoche), but it felt like everything annoying and whiny and bad about the other films he's written/been involved with turned up to eleven.

i don't really know why it bothered me here and not elsewhere though. i guess i just have different taste than i did before. it's just so whiny, and everyone is such a cartoon character. it's painful to watch, especially poor jennifer jason leigh's character. tom noonan and the actually puppetry are good though.

i guess that does a poor job of explaining why it struck me the wrong way, but w/e

There is literally nothing wrong with his taste. For only having watched 700 films and living a colorful life, he knows plenty about the golden age and classical era in American film. You'd be surprised how easy he is to talk to.

me again
i'll admit i'm a pleb in terms of not seeing classic movies. i took two film classes where i watched a "classic" every day, but my professors taste wasn't exactly alligned with what most consider essential. been on letterboxd for about 2 months now and have seen more movies in the past 2 months than in the previous 3 years or so

here's the past few weeks, with a big gap during finals

i've given five stars to a lot of movies, just not the ones on that list. also, ratings are up to each person.

for me, five stars means it's one of my favorites of all time. 4.5 means near-perfect/classic.
